Ozzie's MHD Tuning

I have a 2011 e92 Coupe, N55 6 MT. It has a Pure 2 turbo, Fuel-It PI, JB4, and all of the necessary supporting hardware. I recently brought all of the engine mods safely together with the MHD flash. Boy did I.

As the more experienced guys over on the N54 threads have been giddy over the MHD for over a year, I thought I'd give it a try when turning up the boost. For now I chose to go with the JB4 and the MHD combo as I like the capability to have everything on my handy dandy cell phone. All about convenience.

Prior to the MHD install I was sitting on Map 7 at 19 or 20 psi. The car was quick, but not enough to raise the heartbeat, and I was concerned about engine misses at high boost. No mas.

After installing the MHD flash Justin had me run the car on Map 7 to see how things were. After some time and him making some changes that he had me load, he felt that the car was ready for Map 6. At first he had me walk the high boost high wire with a net by using the same boost values as Map 7. A few runs, logs and email exchanges later he said that I was ready for high boost. Boy, was he wrong. Those 4 or 5 pounds took a quick car and turned it into a four wheeled beast. The car may have been ready for it, but Ozzie335i certainly was not. And I mean that in a good way.

I have only had limited time in really getting on it, but I can say that this as a stand alone tune would be the best of both worlds. Below 3000 RPMs the car feels like a peppy 328i. Give it the gas and that mild mannered yuppie mobile sheds it's sport coat and opens up the gates of hell. In third gear doing a pull I can feel the MFactory 3.46 LSD doing its job as the Michelin PSS tires fight for traction. The first run and it scared the heck out of me, but per Steve at Fuel-It, is expected. If anyone goes this route, I strongly suggest an LSD, both for safety, and in order to allow your rear brakes to last any period of time.

A call out to Justin is in order. He answers questions, no matter how basic. His patience can be seen on these very pages, and his competency spoke when I went WOT. Wow! The fact that he believes in safely increasing the boost should be welcome by anyone interested in an all out effort, or one of the off the shelf maps. People here need to be patient on this effort, as we are way ahead of the N54 community at this point in our engine lives. As we dial my bad boy in I'll provide updates. In the meantime I can assure you that I will be putting a few N54 and LS powered Chevys in their places. I might even change my license plate from 183 CI to LS LOL.

Wow, thank you very much for this post. I'll honestly say it's been great working with you thus far. And it's pleasure being the choice for tuning your build.

The 328i analogy has me cracking up, haha. But that's my goal. You to be happy with the car you spent that money on. We are still early in your custom tune. So once we get some more logs down, we will unlock even more out of her.

Looking for to continuing helping you with your build.

That's sweet. I didn't realize Justin did MHD jb4 tunes. Glad you're liking the set up OP! How are you controlling the port injection?

Thanks for the update. Doesn't surprise me you are happy with Justin's tuning and service. He has been great developing tuning for the n55.

Do you have any logs you could share? What fuel? Also, did you guys test the limits on the stock fuel system to see what the limit is before port injection is required?

We did not test the limits without PI on this car. We went straight in for kill mode so to speak. He is away I believe currently. Once he's back and commence tuning again we will toss logs up.

Fuel is E50.

And thank you for the kind words.

Are you using this in conjunction with your DINAN brother, or did you lose the DINAN tune?

Dinan tune should have been overwritten on first flash. This is a custom flash designed by me to work with the JB4.

Hi DK, as Justin said the Dinan tune is no longer. When I put the PI in at 16th psi the car had more pull than the Dinan stage 3. FYI, the Dinan stage 3 is 16 psi. On map 7 @ 20 psi it left the Dinan 3 far back in my rear view mirror. The difference between 20 an 24 feels greater than 16 to 20. It crossed the threshold where the car now literally rips. At 20 a good driver can handle it. At 24, you darn well better not be distracted, as it demands respect. I understand why Justin wanted 4th gear pulls as there are traction issues in third which would likely throw off the logging results. I honestly can't understand why anyone would want 6 or 700 hp in these cars, other than to come here and say I bad. They would require a helmet and a roll cage, as traction would really be an issue. 20 psi will be fine with me, with the occasional 24 to really show my boosted little 183 inch car can do.

Since you are port, are you dual walbro pumps?

Thanks for the update and good to see her running good at 24psi. Please keep us posted on how things develop and if she consistently runs good over time.

quick view from revision 2 of Ozzie's custom backend....

will post logs after a couple more revisions. Currently running 23-24psi midrange small taper to 21.5psi up top. Still quite rich for E50 and as its only the second revision. Leaning it out some more will reduce/kill the timing corrections in this screenshot. Still more power to be had at the same boost ratio.

Couple timing corrections happened at that data point. But recovered. That's what you were seeing.

Anyone knows what psi is given in each map? There is a manual for N54 not N55.

Just loaded revision 1_1 that Justin sent me the other day. I am unable to go full bore as it is wet out. From cruising around a bit though, it seems that he has done something in the 2800 to 3200 rpm area as the driveability has improved. Much smoother just driving it.

Hmm, might have to check MHD out, since you and I have very similar cars and setups.
