Chip ECU Flash Summary
I compiled a cheat sheet list of ECU tuners and their claimed hp gains and price (no torque but similar to hp range gains, using the E90 325i)
Updated Jan 2009 Technik 25 hp $899 http://www.technikpower.com/site/pro...model_name%3D2 Evotech $ (335 turbo only) UpSolute 15 hp $400 http://www.upsolute.com/index.php?op...id_model=13295 Turner 19 hp $999 http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...0&subcat_id=20 Speed Innovation (None for BMWs) http://www.speedinnovations.com/ Superchips 12 hp $599 http://eurobahnmotorsport.com/superc.../i-168051.aspx Active Autowerk $499 (E90 325i, 330i under development...335 turbo only) http://www.activeautowerke.com/index.htm?menu=1 Dinan waiting Each of above has been discussed to death, so no more bla bla bla. I'm interested in real life impressions of people who actually have their ECU flashed by one of the above. If there is one I missed, then please list info. I'd like to know if any of you did a self dyno on your car. List E9x model, year, dyno results, and how long ago since ECU flash. If no dyno, then your best impression on your satisfaction with your experience so far. Vendor comments welcome

On Dyno, power at wheel....
I bet for ECU re-mapping or flashing them cannot gain for more than 3-4HP... and in real life 15 HP, cannot make u feel much difference... My friend has 325i and installed the 3000cc replacement kit and supercharged it with VF then having some minor tuning like exhaust system, Gruppe M Intake and of course ECU remapping He can gain around 40 HP... after losing around 20,000 USD so it is totally impossible to gain 15HP from ECU flashing only...

15hp is noticable... but look at the increase in torque..... Fitting a LSD is also important... putting all available power on the road |

DINAN ECU
Are you sure the Dinan ECU is coming out in August?
I have spoken to many different people there and each have said different times....one said this month....another said next year... ? |

Let me toss my two cents in here!
I think a Grouppem type or similar intake coupled with the super sprint or similar style headers and exhaust system would yield a measurable performance gain. A remap would be in order to take full advantage of these features. Any performance gain would pale in comparison to increased boost in the N54B30. I am still not totally sold on the Dinan throttle body. KSfrogman has one installed on his Just from looking at my stock exhaust I can see how much easier the engine would breath if they were equipped with header. Of course if you want to market the e90s as environmentally friendlier we are stuck with an exhaust manifold with two HUGE catalytic converters tucked up close to the block. They heat up fast which is better for your mother...but, at a cost of over all performance. Its tough enough to squeeze anything else out of the N52 especially those of us with the 3 stage intake. At most any of these gains would take me from 0-60 in maybe 5.9 or 6.0 vs the 6.3 as advertised (steptronic tranny). I am not convinced I need to shave off .2-.3 seconds. FLAME SUIT ON |

Agreed. The real gain in hp is to trade up from the 325/328/330 to the 335.

Autothority is the nearest reseller of Upsolute chip around here. I checked with them and they said they'll do 325 for about 400. However Upsolute is based in Austria and their 325 is a 2.5L engine while the NA 325 3.0L.
Anyone know more details about their chip (or any european tuner's 325 chip, for that matter)? |

I think the key to a successful chip/tune, is being able to modify the VANOS system. The US motors are as follows:
325i = 3.0L 215hp, 185 tq 328i = 3.0L 230hp, 200 tq 330i = 3.0L 255hp, 220 tq (3 stage intake) The 325 and 328 use the same intake manifold, and are almost the same motor. the 325 and 330 are even more similar, with the exception of the intake manifold. Software is playing a huge part in the tuning of these cars. I suspect the valve timing and lift events, as controlled by the vanos system are making the majority of the power here. Without being able to tap into the vanos system, you can only gain maybe 10-15hp with fuel and timing changes alone. The newer i-vtec honda motors are seeing huge gains with custom ecu tuning and the ability to alter the cam timing. With bolt-ons and tuning, the K20 in the RSX-S and civic Si are putting down 220+ wheel hp without cam changes. With cams, 240+. built, these motors are putting out some insane numbers, a lot of it to do with the level of custom ecu tuning that you can get for them. If someone can figure out how to tap into the BMW ecu's ability to tune the vanos system, I'm sure there would be significant gains to be had. |
