Quick noob Q: What oil does the 335i take?

I figured someone will know it, and I don't have a manual yet to look at! ;-)

I assume it's not synthetic 5W-30, is it? I have a gallon left from my last car, and was wondering what to do with the oil, since I can't return it to the store...

Nice! So would adding Mobil 1 5w-30 for the top ups be a problem?

And oil changes in this car are covered already, right? So there's be no point to take the oil in and ask them to use it (and save on them charging me for oil).

I don't remember what the car came with, but I always use 0w40 Mobil 1 when I change my oil.

Keep in mind the BMW Oil is Castrol Synthetic 5W-30 which is different than Mobil one 0-40. And I don't know how that person above that Quaker from.

I always provide the oil for my changes so I know I'm getting good quality oil, i.e., Mobil 1. 10W-30 for summer, 5W-30 for colder months.

BMW uses Castrol as their oil provider. FYI.

BMW uses a rebranded European-only formulation of fully synthetic Castrol Edge 5W-30, which adheres to BMW-LL01 (Longlife-01) specifications. As far as I know, there are currently no retail oils in the U.S. that adheres to these specifications (not sure about Canada), but that's not to say that the oils here (Castrol Syntec, Mobil 1 Synthetic, etc.) aren't good oils.

That extra bottle of 5W-30 oil should be fine to keep in the car for top-offs should the need arise. Don't go driving crazy miles between each oil change and you'll be fine, and keep in mind that if you're using conventional oil (not recommended) instead of synthetic oil, you'll need to change your oil much more often.

Not really. Mobil 1 0W-40 meets the BMW spec. That's the only off-the-shelf oil I know sold in the mass market stores in the USA. (BMW oil sold by BMW is not available in mass market stores AFAIK.) Might be other oils. Key is make sure it meets the BMW Long Life spec.

Don't get the regular Mobil 1 5W30 or the regular Castro 5W30 synthetic's at Costco/Target/Walmart. They're NOT the same as the oil sold at the Dealer.

Like other's have said, the dealer 5W30 is a Euro blend. The only other oil to get would be the Mobil 0W40 or 5W40 (not easy to find), which are Euro blends that meet BMW LL-01 spec's for extended intervals.
