Smile

I was delivered my E93 convertible 320i M-Sport on the 9th of April 08 from Scotthalls BMW in Hampshire (UK). Thus far the roof has lkeaked twice, the drivers side electric seat motor has packed up, the boot (Trunk) closure sensors have both failed, ther is a scratch in the paint under the laquor, the car has had issues with starting when hot and finally the engine management light came on with the car juddering - Which then could not be replicated by BMW. All the other faults were resolved.......

However I have been lucky - Scotthalls (My dealer) took my case on last week once I finally lost my sence of humor and got BMW UK to agree to replace my car. There is still a long waiting list for the replacement car, but at least I know it is on its way.

Nice one Scotthalls............

Well I can only offer my congratulations!!

Can I ask what the terms of the "replacement" were?? Straight swap? Or?

Well all I can say, again, is well done!!

Sounds like your car was a bit of a Friday one mind....

But even so, the treatment you have received seems to be a bit different to that experienced by a few others around here......

E93 320i owner

I had serveral problems to.
airco blower making a hell of a noise (replaced by dealer x), roof rubbers melting (1 rubber replaced by dealer x), some minor parts replaced with some damage, also the carpet driver side where the corner is that meets the middle tunnel there was a cut in the carpet (so dealer x replaced the whole carpet so big job as the seats need to be removed). We also had the iddle problem with the engine but they sayd there where no problems showing up on the computer.

But as we know some guys from another dealership y and those guys can borrow the computer sometimes from the dealership to do some after hours jobs for there own wallets we took it to this friend and he told me that lambda sensor failed to have reading and some other problems showed up.

As we took it to the dealer x to replace carpets and so on and the iddle problem was not fixed and the day after we got the car back the car whent into limp mode on the road we called our friend who is also a bmw mobile service guy and was just on duty that night. He took it to his dealership Y and the did a readout and there where some 1O pages of defekts reading of the computer.

As the lambda sensor thing was now ok from the first dealership x who fixed it only the injector of the 3th cilinder was showing a default. So the car is now in dealership Y as i trust my guy more who works there (and obiously the dealer x lied about not any computer errors showing up) and i should pic the car up tonight. I let you know if the injector replacement did the job and my problem is solved.

Update:
Car has a replaced 3th cylinder injector. Test driving reaveled al was fine. We got the car back today. But while driving home car after 1/2 hour went in limb mode again. So its going back in the dealership today to let the computer read what is the problem now and then we will get the car back for now because we can drive it normaly and the limb mode is only a few times a day. The dealership wil consult germany in the weekend and they will get back to us.

BMW have a problem with these engines. It's high time they adressed it, rather than continuing to make paying customers suffer.

Car is in the dealership again; While driving to the dealership the last 1OO yards of a 3/4 hour trip the car went in limp mode again. Now only driving on 2 cylinder with the warnings on in the dash.

As sayd all remaining injectors will be replaced. Wil get the car back tomorrow. I will update.

Good luck pmmeke - at least you have a dealership that you can trust and who are actually making an effort to resolve the problems....just hope you manage to get to the bottom of it...

Today I found your forum. I am ‘happy’ to discover that I am not alone! I have a July07 320 SE Cab with efficient dynamics. I love the car in all respects, except the engine.

I read the thread from start to end and pull out key words/phases, which strike a significant cord with my experiences and multiple dealer visits:

- Hesitancy (oh yes)
- 1900 ‘flat-spot’
- 30mpg max (regardless of fuel type)
- Judder worse at low fuel (apparently the fuel tank is split and relies on a pump to equalise the fuel level in each half)
- Coils and Injectors (3 calls to BMW Emergency Services)
- V29 software (March 08 did make a +ve difference)
- Rev drop on idle (idles at around 600 rpm)

I can add:

- New clutch at 7000 miles
- Burns a lot of oil
- Squeaky clutch pedal when driving only
- Steering lock issues inserting the key
- Random radio volume change
- Random window activities (sometimes 1 inch, sometimes 6, sometimes all the way)
- Occasional kangarooing in 2nd and 3rd up to 4500 revs
- Low torque making it almost impossible to drive at 30 mph in 4th gear

Of course, many symptoms are intermittent and frequently my dealer cannot replicate. The latest advice was ‘yes we can emulate some of the low speed lack of torque hesitency but if you turn the gear change indicator off and drive the car harder then it is much better’. Hmmm, right. Actually the dealer has been incredibly helpful and patient with me. Having read the forum, I now see why.

The car goes in yet again next week…I noticed that some had success with a new Cam Sensor (whatever that is). I will suggest the dealer considers this as an option.

Suffice to say, I have escalated the case to my fleet manager, as I have suffered since delivery.

Update: as we know the technisian very well we have a fairly honnest update of the problems i think.

We got a call of the dealership the problem is not solved but they think they are getting closer to the solution.

Injectors: so they started to replace the injectors but first they did extensive measurments of all working parts of the car. They found that the remaining injectors where working perfekt and they could not find anything wrong with them so it no use replacing them BUT WHAT THEY FOUND is that injectors inject gas into the engine. Then the gas is ignited with a spark device and the spark device is powered electrickly by a part that makes elektrisity. The part that makes electrisity is called a coil or in dutch bobijn. (1 coil for each injector so 4 in total)

These coil devices are not working properly. So you have 4 coils that provide electrisity for the injectors to ignite and they replaced all 4 coils in stead of the injectors.

It was working but then they had to reprogram the EMC computer. After that they car would not start anymore and had even wurs problems.

The technisian explained to us that the had to further reprogram the EMC to work with the 4 new coils but for today there was no more time to do so.
(if the coils dont have enough electrisity or the timing is wrong then the gas is not ignited and so the cilynder is not fired)

I hope they can complete the reprogram of the emc tomorow and we will have the car running perfekt again.

I will update tomorow.

yes but for now we have to be patient and c how it works out I dont know much about cars but i think the camshaft sensor also has something to do with the timing of the ignition so i will ask tomorow if there is a connection there with the coils or the reprogram of the emc.

They could just replace the injectors and have me on the road again but they sayd that they will test the car extensivly and i wont get it back until they are fairly sure the problem is solved.

So .... keeping the faith

Garage List
would you believe it?....

...well I never thought Id say it tell you the truth and it might not be what some people want to hear but "she's fixed!"

..hesistation gone!
..no rev blip at standstill!
..smoother drive!

been driving her for a week now and shes fine!..doesnt feel like a patch but more sorted....

an engine warning light a couple of weeks ago "low power" put her back with the service guys. ALL injectors were replaced and a revised V29 software installed. they wont replace anything unless they the computer records a fault remember!:

..ive also noticed the gear change mapping is slightly revised (she's auto) around the 1000-1500 revs which seems to help. and the steering is alot lighter (its electric remember, must be in the v29 upgrade?)

all in all probably as she should have been 6 months ago....tut

and the legal stuff was getting a bit messy re rejecting the car......

remember...ive had all injectors replaced, cam sensors and the new software..I think u need all working well for these new engines to work. although i dont think ul ever get the suggested mpg!!

good luck all , if things change ill let u know

Y

Yatesy - great news for you You mention a 'revised' v29....don't suppose you know any other details about it do you...so that I can talk to my dealer about it. Mine is manual, not auto, but goes in next week.

Mine Too!!

I am glad your 320i Cab is now fixed Yatesey.

Mine was running OKish till a few months back with the MPG gradually dropping to about 27mpg, but the idle speed had always been uneven from new. I mentioned this and Snows IW replaced an Airflow sensor, which sorted the idle. Then a couple of weeks later the low rev - low power symptom started, which being an Auto upset the gearchanging, Snows updated the software which helped a bit, but after a week the engine low power light came on and it went in again and they then changed the Cam sensor.

That was a month ago, the car now feels better than ever, smoother, and better but not brilliant low rev power. The overall mpg has risen to 34mpg!! which is acceptable, it got as high as 37mpg!!!!! touring round North Wales recently.

I was on the verge of trying to reject the car and going for the 320d which is now available for the vert, but was shocked about the 2200!! extra. I gave the car one more chance [I sound like Basil Fawlty with his Morris 1100] and I am glad I did as the car is now how it should have been from new. The software update in May also sorted the USB memory stick random play I have been complaining about from day 1.

Its a shame its taken a year to get the car to a point it should have been from new, I don't think I have have had as much problems as some of you, but hopefully the engine is now sorted and it doesn't get a bad reputation from a resale point of view.

Well...its good to see some good news for a change.....as I see it, the problem is that this is just the latest attempt to solve the problems we have all encountered, but which BMW have never admitted to...as a result it will be another "well, try this sir...." kind of exercise which, depending on how patient you are/how many other attempts they have had, you will accept...or not.....

Update: problem seems resolved. We got the car back now 1/2 hour and my wife called me to say its running and shes driving around without probs. Of course its to early to tell if now all problems are gone forever but we are hopefull (i asked about replacing the cam sensor but he checked it out and no default was messured so its still the original cam sensor. They know of the probs of the cam sensor, there was even e bmw repport about it but its only affecting the 32O I non convertibles)
