I feel your pain! BMW "fixed" my car on many occasions. Then they eventually resolved the problem, from their point of view, by telling me the problem did not exist, although on the same day they apparently told BMW in Germany that the problem had been diagnosed and fixed.

Sadly the only way to cure your problem is to get rid of the car.

Not much I can do, I've bought it second hand 2 months ago and not from a BMW dealer, I've financed it so to change it would mean I would lose a lot of money as a dealership would not offer enough to clear the finance, all I can do is run it till I break even in terms of car value on trade in and settlement figure then change it. That's probably 2 years away! All I can hope is that a fix is found, i.e not just replace the coils and injectors but actually solve the issue!

Got my car back yesterday, they finally completely replaced the coil pack after only changing one last time even though they assured me it had all been done.
The car is now 200% better which reaffirms my thoughts that is was the car and not me.

My advice as Mattstorm says is keep taking it back dont give up, and if anyone even suspects the car is faulty get it to a dealer and keep mithering as its the only way we will all get to the bottom of this.

I now intend to make the most of my car this weekend so will report back with any updates.

Its just unbelievable how much better the car is now compared to what I thought was a slight problem before.

Sorry, what I meant was you seemed to be implying that there is only one coil pack on the engine but there are four.

Hi Everyone, well what a morning I have just had. My car was due to go in tomorrow morning after picking it up two days ago and still noticing missfires. Got up this morning and 3 miles into my journey the engine dropped a cylinder, light came on, engine clearly running on 3 cylinders. I limped it into BMW who have confirmed that one cylinder has gone and will be fixed. I spent all morning arguing to get the fourth cylinder done as I have had two done last monday now a third has packed up today but as there are no faults at present on that fourth cylinder they can't change it as BMW won't pay for it so I've told them to do it anyway and I will pay for it as I'm sick of the issue. My dealer has been great but BMW will be getting a letter of complaint regarding this issue.

I doubt that u will get very far with the complaint..it's a well known problem that BMW refuses to acknowledge. They should have recalled all 320i engines and come up with a solution for the problem. I suspect there is no cheap quick fix, hence their reason for keeping mum about this. I have had 4 coils removed last month and the engine is still juddering..sometimes i wish like taking the engine out and putting a V8 in there(i wish)...lol.

My 320i bought from new only ever did this once. I called BMW Emergency service and hew replaced one coil and one injector and it's been fine since. It's just coming up to three years old now. It's weird how some do it and some don't.
I have think it's as it swaps to a more efficient mapping depending on road conditions, and the leaner "efficient dynamics" map is at fault. I always drive mine like it's stolen so it's probably never had cause to swap maps....

This is the problem I think, we are being told different things. When they had my car 4 weeks ago they claimed to have replaced coil (singular), then when it went in again 2 weeks ago it had coil (singular) and software upgrade. Neither of these so called remedies worked.

This time I made a point of reading the job sheet and it specifically said "install uprated coil pack and injectors". I cant confirm if this was done but as said the car feels like a different vehicle at the moment.

Hope this helps.

OK so got the car back yesterday lunchtime after cylinders 1 and 4 being done last monday, then braking down Friday, cylinder 2 being done Saturday morning and Cylinder 3 being done on Saturday morning but paid for by me (parts) and my dealer (labour) as BMW wouldn't do it as it wasn't showing faults but we all know it would have failed within probably days! so I now have 4 new coils 4 new injectors and 4 new plugs and guess what....... yes you've guessed it...... its still jittery!!! Doesn't feel like its missfiring but at 30mph 4th gear then a gentle increase in power the engine sounds fine but it feels like its slightly laboured! My dealer has told me that all the excess fuel unburnt going through to the exhaust system can damage the NOX sensor and this can cause similar symptoms but I'm guessing it won't throw a code up until it fails.

Its not all bad news tho, the car does feel a lot better and sounds better. At idle it getting quieter which may be the change to V power fuel. The main change is the fuel consumption. Before the new coils etc.. I was getting 33 mpg and when I filled up the car reckoned I would get 440 miles before next fill up, well yesterday it said 512 miles now if I get that I'll be getting 38 mpg which is a big increase, its as if the car now knows it can run properley following its new coils and so can achieve better!

So new coils, new injectors, new plugs! Fixed... errrm NO!..... better... errm Yes!

One of my mates who owns a performance garage in Middlesbrough called Falcon Performance had suggested changing the particulate filter as the next port of call..maybe a senior tech from BMW could enlighten us and tell us if this would help?

I really feel for you..
I had 4x everything + NOx sensor + engine wiring harness + software updates = errrr... rejected as still rubbish.
Search back on here, I'm sure it'll pop up.......

All petrol engines have a Catalytic converter, this behaves similar to a DPF on a diesel engine. Basically they trap particles to stop them going into the atmosphere. If you get a car which is only driven short distances it can clog up because the idea with a CAT and DPF's is that when you drive on a motorway the gasses from the engine are much hotter and the particles are burnt off. This missfire situation causes alot of unburnt fuel to go throuogh to the exhaust system and it clogs the CAT, it can also damage the NOX sensor which is linked to that system. A clogged CAT like a clogged DPF can cause back pressure which can cause a jittery engine. I know this as my last car was a Volvo V50 2.0D with DPF.

Driven mine this morning and seemed to behave itself, but my journey is 99% 60mph, its the cruising at 30 mph in 4th which scares me, might just keep it in 3rd at 30mph to keep the revs above that magic number of 2000rpm.

Is it just me or are the main jitteryness at 1500rpm to 1900rpm 3rd, 4th gear. This is when mine used to missfire before the replacement.

Spent 8 hours detailing it though, at leat it looks nice!

A catalytic convertor is not a filter - hence the name. The "catalytic" part is a chemical reaction that takes place to break down carbon monoxide. There are no particles emitted from a petrol engine that can clog a catalytic convertor, unlike diesel which produces soot and hence has a particulate filter. Unburned fuel can damage the rhodium covering on the cat matrix and make it ineffective but it does not get blocked in the same way a DPF can.

It behaves similar in the sense that it can collect unburnt fuel and rubbish, the regeneration cycle which BMW do is designed to burn off these substances. So yes you are right it doesn't act as a filter like a dpf but they can get clogged like a dpf if you only do short journeys and definitely if the car has been missfiring. This is why BMW tell you to take it onto a motorway for 30 mins to clear it out. The car actually measures the 30 mins just above 100kmh about 70mph as a regeneration cycle to clearout the CAT. The CAT obviously turns exhaust gasses into water where a DPF is an actual filter but they can both get clogged and cause a choking situation to the engine.

Yes this is exactly right, I found out when I complained that I could smell burning oil or similar. When I analysed my journeys over the last few weeks all had been on 30mph roads in rush hour so when I finally got onto a decent run this happened hence the smell.

Well myupdate on the weekend, the car is still running 100% better it is actually now a JOY to drive. My mpg has gone up from 23 to 34 on same journeys and there have been no stutters, over revs or blank spots.

Roof down = Head now like an elephants back but great weekend.

Fingers still crossed though.

Try the V Power jotty, its more expensive and is supposed to take a few tanks before it takes effect but mine is defo improving in engine tickover noise and mpg.

It is an awesome car, when it works. I even found myself yesterday doing a clarkson as I came out of bend and turned to my girlfriend and said outloud, "This is very good"

JOY to drive lol! I like it! I'm not sure BMW wanted us to go through ****! before we started using the word JOY!

I'm going to run mine for a few days and see how I go then take it back in to see if anything is showing as its better but not perfect!
