My 320 had the same coils issue which I also belive meant it failed the MOT. I managed to get the dealer to fix even though the car was 1 year out of warranty

Is it just the turbo 2.0 litre engines or the 318 2.0l engines that have problems?

N43 with worn-out timing chain?

Hi all,
new to this forum. Own a 320i -08 with just above 100 000km on it. Nice to drive, but during the past 2,5 years I have been forced to tow it 5 times to a workshop. 11 coils (2x8 due to service bulletin), one complete motor electronic unit, and now earlier this week it gave me the engine warning light. Again.

This time apparently the timing chain is worn out, which sounds completely insane. Unfortunately the car just passed 100 000km which makes my insurance not valid. 2500€ repair...

Somebody else had this problem?

Regards

ive now had CO2 sensor all coil packs and sparkers replaced fault seemed to be flagging up on bank 2 so the injector was replaced there along with another new coil and spark plug engine was flushed out as when the dealer first got my car in when the completed a service the oil filter snaped off when changing so they though parts of the filter was floating around the engine causing problems so engine got flushed and filled back up with proper oil as again they just put cheap stuff in first time round. but still having the same problems!!! ive herd a few people here saying possible faulty cam shaft sensor? any ideads?

I am having this problem that you have now. I am also from Sweden and have a 2008 with 85000 km and my waranty is out. I am getting the fault code 2A98
and yellow engine light. When i start the car cold i dont have these problems but after ive been driven for about 10-20 km the engine light sometimes appears and when i turn the car of and try to turn it on the second after, I get a very long start time, about 5 seconds and then the engine light turns up right after. The fault code indicates that there might be a problem with the camshaft/crankshaft sensors or that there is something with the chain.

Bmw_ET please pm me I would really like to discuss this further with someone that has been talking to mechanics in Sweden.

My bundle of joy has been a pain

I have a e92 320i 59 coupe and I have had the EML yellow light twice, was firstly told no fault found as intermittent but they replaced coil pack as it had a recall on it (done Dec 2012 and was in warranty) EML light on in Jan 2013 (surprise now not in warranty) and told it was the NOX sensor.

I got 50% off the part price but not on labour and ended up getting diagnostic for free. Complained as only 27k on clock and outraged NOX failed but only got 50% so paid £297 in total for the repair but hey hoy. Since then feels alot better but still mpg i get seems low at 25-27mpg around town and brief motorway journeys but I do have a brick for a right foot

Bear 85 what was your symptoms? I got my coils changed 500km ago and got the engine light when after about 20 km drive. When i then start the car it cranks for about 5 seconds before the engine starts running. Did you have this issue and they said it was the nox sensor?

This coil issue appears frequently in direct injection engines... remember the fsi motors of vag group.
I believe that the 2.0lt pre face E90 don't have these issues, or at least they don't appear to the 05-07 models so often (N46 engines).

Lastway: Sad to hear you have the same problem. It started the same way for me, with the car being hard to start. I´m not allowed to send PM´s for some reason. Can you PM me?

Follow up from last week: I talked to BMW Sweden and in the end they paid for all the parts and 25% of the labour. My local workshop stood for additional 25% of the labour so in the end it worked out ok for me.

However, 2 days later the car was hard to start and gave me the warning light again... despite the chain replacement. So right now my car is back at the workshop for troubleshooting.

I actually managed to get the old chain home with me and yes, it is quite worn and prolonged. But if it´s really that bad I can´t tell... But the fact that I now have the same problem again despite the chain replacement makes me wonder... Maybe it´s just the camshaft sensor or similar that´s bad...

To be continued.

BTW, how prolonged must a timing chain be to cause timing problems? Maybe not easy to answer but still somebody might have a clue.

Right now when measuring the whole chain length it´s about 1cm longer than original state. I guess that´s pretty much?

Hi all,

New User - but just wondered whether anyone got anywhere with collating all these issues and reporting to BMW. I have had a numbe of them with my 320i E90 Coupe:

3076 miles

Fault: Windscreen top seal lifted in the o/s corner
Cause: Seal distorted
Rectification: Replaced windscreen top seal

28/06/10 – 6069 miles

Fault: o/s gutter trim keeps coming loose
Cause: clips weak
Rectification: replace gutter trim.

Fault: Windscreen top seal lifted away from body
Cause: Trim distorted
Rectification: Replace windscreen top seal.

19/01/11 – 12152 miles

Fault: intermittent rattle from driver’s side front door armrest
Cause: contact/friction
Rectification: remove door card, replace clips and lubricate contact points.

Repair passenger side front alloy wheel, paint peeling – rectification

18/07/11 – 15051 miles

Fault: Rattle from passenger side door
Cause: loose
Rectification: Trim secured.

12/12/12 – 16788 miles

Fault: Engine emissions warning light on car
Cause: BMW test module advised Catalytic converter poor efficiency and to replace
Rectification: Replace Catalytic convertor

04/01/12 – 17820 miles

Fault: Engine emissions warning light on car
Cause: Nitrogen Oxide sensor which monitors CAT
Rectification: replace Nitrogen Oxide sensor.

The ignition coils have also been replaced.

BMW extended the warranty, but the garage just doesnt want to know. Surely BMW should recall the car for such common faults?

Thanks

Mine (09' 320i) got yellow engine light after 10k KM, turned out 1 faulty coil (3rd cylinder). Since then no major issue, runs quite smoothly.
Now approaching 40k KM. I realized early it helps using best possible fuel,
also taking some rides in highway after a prolonged period of driving in town.
