Possible BBK Upgrade: Need Opinion from Members

Alright, some of you e46fanatics members might recall that there used to be a company that would sell you a front and rear BBK upgrade consisting of Porsche calipers and matching rotors along with custom carriers for our applications.

Now, if enough interest is demonstrated i am very capable of making this happen. Price point would be in the $2000-$2200 range, might go up little but not by much.

setup i had in mind would be a stock 997 factory setup which would be 6 piston fronts and 4 piston rears. Porsche calipers are made by Brembo, BTW. just in case anyone was wondering.

Rotors: i've gotten an estimate on rotora calipers, brembo calipers are ridiculously overpriced for what you get.

I was also thinking of DBA rotors.

yup, around there. the differences will probably limited to rotors. Top of the line DBA rotors are about $500 each. Intermediate ones are about half.

Make this happen at the price point you indicated and there will be loads of interest I am sure.

The calipers wont say Porsche on them will they? I'm interested and surprised because that is half the price of a similar brembo set

How do you get past the bias setup issues that the caliper needs to get setup for isn't it designed for the Porsche? And which Porsche a - rear engined Porsche?

It's a pretty cool idea - I don't want to shut it down - but I don't think its a practical one. There are complete BBK solutions out there for those that don't want to spend the money on a Brembo Kit. But honestly just wondering on the safety here of mixing and matching stuff.

Ron,

I put a set of Big Reds form a 993 Twin Turbo on my 86 944 Turbo (converted to GT3-S PCA Club Car). I installed a brake bias valve but didn't need to use it. This could well have been a stroke of luck on the overall bias.

The 944 turbo S might make a good donor vehicle. Similar weight distribution but a bit lighter.

trade secrets. But i will explain later.

But if you'd like to share some info that could potentially be helpful, we would appreciate it.

what trade secrets? I am dying to know. You must know something Brembo doesnt know?

Here is what I do know, so hopefully I can shed some light in it from my perspeective:
Piston area…effective radius…factored with line pressure = Brake torque
Line pressure is dictated by the vehicles master cylinder and proportioning.

So your changing the caliper (piston area), and selecting a disc size (effective radius).

It's no trade secret other than properly selecting the appropriate components for the application. Brembo, Stoptech, AP, Alcon they all know this and they do that.

I know its exciting to think oh a 'Brembo' product for a lower price - but consider this, what is getting put on here is that its not engineered properly and there are weak links everywhere.

I mean, I understand that it feels like as a BMW owner you get shafted(trust me I've had that feeling a ton of times), but saving $500- $600 on a BBK isnt the solution. And its not because you are a BMW owner - its the same price across the board from Nissan 350z owners to Honda S2000 owners they pay the same price. The reason the 'Real' Brembo system costs what it does is cause its a no compromise solution.

Each and every component is top of the line, from the Ferodo pads, to the highest quality calipers and discs, to all the connecting hardware, which includes the McLaren hardware which no one has been able to match yet. Other companies cut prices by using Asian manufacturing to create similar looking products, others use cheaper discs and pads to cut cost, some do a combination of both. The worst is simply thinking you can take OEM components from one car and adapt them to a completely different type of vehicle. AND you still end up with (while it is a Brembo manufactured product) … and OEM type component, matched with lesser quality discs and hardware’s.

Basically a complete Brembo kit which we are comparing to - is a turnkey solution with nothing but the best options and components. Everything else is a compromise in one way or another (reason this peaked my interest is cause I heard about it going on in the VW/Audi forums and it just didnt make sense to me that this was a safe soltuion - so I asked Brembo about it - and ofcourse its not endorsed.)

Personally when it comes to brakes , its the one place where you dont want to put a compromise on it. Ask any racer what part of his car he needs to be able to trust and feel with a 100% confidence, and if you arent a racer and just want them on your car, this is still the only safety feature you use 100's of times every time you drive.

Anyway guys those were my thoughts on it and my concern over your safety in putting someting together.

This is not going to be safe and it will not bias correctly. The callipers may all look the same but the use different diameter piston to get the biasing and feel correct. The trade secret is P=F/A (pressure=force/area) and T=f x d (Torque= force x distance).

The Bermbo kit looks nice but there not the only game town and the replacement parts are outrages for cost and pad selection is not great. Technically, the Stoptech have a few advantages and really one of the better development programs which is just as important as the product.

I upgraded to DBA rotors, Axxis pad, Motul fluid and stainless line which helped a lot but it only an interim solution if you tracking.
