Congratulations on your purchases, NFS.

Just a small point, but the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens appears twice on the site- the lower-priced one being sold by photoland uk- currently 64.49 inc delivery against Amazon's 70.82.

All the best.

I want to see the lengths to which NFS willl go to get a 6 deduction from Amazon. Will you try forcing them to 'price match', NFS?

I was so looking forward to hearing how Amazon 'buckled' to your consumer rights pressure, NFS.

Not this time Viv, although it's tempting

I actually really like Amazon as a company, I think there service is top notch, so I do tend to order direct from them rather than via the resellers on their site.

Looking forward to getting the camera, although I won't have a clue where to start with it really.

GarryF's photo's in this thread look incredible. Especially the close up portrait shot. That's what inspired me to get the prime lens too as it seems to be ideal for low light pin sharp portraits with lots of differential focus.

Found these example shots as well taken with the same lens. I really want to figure out how to achieve that effect.

Bought a Nikon D40 on Saturday and have found it to be superb for an absolute beginner like myself. It has a full auto 'point and shot' mode which is how I captured this early Sunday morning. Eventually I may read up on how to use the settings manually, but in the meantime I'm just going to enjoy better pictures than I was used to on a small old camera.

Talking Shots

Nikon Fanboy myself here !! One tip on the above shot Carr, learn to focus on the eyes (notice on yours the nose is sharpest ?) , you can have all the fancy kit in the world, but that one change will make a world of difference along with learning to hold camera steady. A lot of people spend more and more on lenses looking for critical sharpness when in fact learning to hold steady would help most. (Oh and dont know if anyone has mentioned, but always use a shutter speed higher than your focal length ... so if you have the lens at 50mm then make sure shutter is higher !!

(Obviously on full auto this is not up to you)

Took these in the bath of my little fella (oh er). Taken with a D80 and a Sigma 18-50 2.8. So using the prime 1.8 I have would have been sharper !!! PS get a prime 50 1.8 .. the Nikon one is also a bargain (mine was 50 sheets).

Thanks for your comments....some of which has gone right over my head. The attached photo was one of my very first with this camera and my son wouldn't keep still long enough to get a clean shot. I will be doing a lot of reading over the coming weeks to improve my knowledge of manual settings rather than leaving it on full auto.

With a very active two year old the days of taking bath shots is over. There is usually more water outside the bath than in it when he finishes!!! Not going to risk my new toy.

Camera arrived today and I've been playing around a bit.

There is a very immediate difference between the kit lens and the 50mm f/1.8 prime lens that even I can see.

The kit lens is 'alright' but the image quality from the 50mm one is amazing.

Really pleased with the camera and I've already got some great pics of the kids. Camera Raw in photoshop is also a revelation - so flexible and so much easy to 'correct' photo's than working with jpegs in photoshop proper.

This is one the first pics I took. Slightly cropped with a fair bit of additional sharpening. Very pleased so far.

Still playing about with the shots I took earlier. 5 mins in the garden and I've actually got some nice shots.

I'm a complete duffer when it comes to cameras, but this one is so easy to use
