So is this just a driving school thing or what exactly is it??

It is an auto-x. We setup a road course type track in a parking lot. The track is marked by orange cones. The day will be part school and part competition. The competition portion of the day is you vs the clock. The person with the fastest time around the course wins. We assess a 2 second penalty per cone hit.

People who run also need to work since the BMW CCA is an all-volunteer organization. Work assignments vary from chasing cones on course to working the start, helping with timing/scoring (my job) or anything else we need.

IMHO this is one of the best ways to spend a Sunday...it is also the cheapest and safest way to improve your driving skills in a competitive environment.

is it free? and is the timing done by a clock/sensor on the ground or just by sight?

Sorry, it is not free...I think the registration fee is $60. Click on the link and the web site will tell you. Timing is done by lights and sensors.

as said timing is by electronic lights at start and finish. there are normally trophies for 1,2 and 3rd place in each class. classes are like M stock, M modified, 4-6 cylinder stock, so on.

even if you just go to watch you may be able to get a ride with an instructor to see if its something you want to try.

You know...I BET that you could take a trophy with the wife's 535xi wagon. I actually bet you'd be faster with that on an auto-x course than with an M3...Track is a different story, but auto-x...

the AX favors less weight and the 535 wagon is heavy. so thats unlikely , unkless its the only one in class!

True enough point...just note that I took 2nd in class (stock 6, 8 and 12 cylinder) out of 14 cars in a stock X3 3.0 on stock A/S tires. And note that my times were faster than many of the M stock guys. You'd be surprised what the awd will do for you in auto-x!!!
