best winter setup combo ?? - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

I know it might be a bit too soon but this is my new baby and wheels and tires are always mod #1. So thinking on what to get for next winter I see 2 options.

1. "used" take off set of 189's to go with snows
2. brand new set of Style 32 17" wheels with snows

I think the cost of both options is almost exactly the same. A number of other 17" wheels are floating around and might be cheaper if bought used but none is attactive IMHO

I don't plan to drive the car with snow on the ground, but I want to be able to drive it over the weekends during the winter months. Currently I have the standard 189's with the summers

17's are generally better for snow because they will decrease the chances of damage. Winter is just a very popular pot-hole time so 18 will get busted much easer due to their proximity to the ground.

Ran with 18's because I didn't like the way the stock 17's looked. I did bend a rim though. Traction wise, the 18's were amazing. Living in chicago, you know how much snow we got this last season. I couldn't wait for it to snow. So, either one would work. If you don't mind the look of 17's, I would stick with them. Like noro said, 17's would decrease the chance for damage.

I would probably go with the 17's, styles 32, 157 and 194 are good looking IMHO.

Was thinking of the 189's route because in this case I would also have 4 spare wheels tires in a sense.

If you are looking for a winter set up, check out the marketplace on this forum. You can usually get better deals here than anywhere else. Also, order your tires from tire rack if you need them. Gary is great. I have ordered two sets of tires from him. Shipping is very fast also. Just my .02

Thanks alot, I am in my 4th bimmer now so pretty familiar with the tools of this hobby.

Not a pro for sure, just past the newbie stage, I wish I had learn to work on these cars a bit, then I might think of myself as a pro, as you said work always on the way.

I ran a set of 18s OZ 35th Anniversary on the E90 last winter and the rims held up fine. I busted one tire though.
