DIY: Exhaust Mod E93 335i

Ok so I know there is a DIY for the E92 owners but I thought I would go and make one for the E93 335i owners out there.

First step is locating the two panels.
total of 3 plastic screws to take out
In step 1 you'll notice the two panels, taking out the 1st screw is easy, but the green ones are hard - lol broke a sweat doing this.
After you take them out, it's a piece of cake.

NOTE: panel 2 does not come out all the way

Push the metal pin in and pull the adapter out

Push panel 2 back in so the rubber strip goes over it and then replace panel 1

I just left hte screws out because it was a BIATCH to remove. Will replace them when returning to the stealership.

Enjoy!

So how do you like it? Is there a noticeable difference?

Did you try the golf tee mod first? How come you went with this method over that?

Unhooking anything electrical may be logged in the ECU.

What ever happened to simply tying the vacumm line with a zip tie. Just make sure the tube is completely sealed and your off to go. Much quicker and easier than going through the trunk compartment.

I've heard that disconnecting this may throw a code and/or be stored, the latter of which would be somewhat suspicious if you reconnected it prior to taking the car in. However, I suppose it's possible that it was an intermittent connection that restored itself prior to going in. I've been using the ball-bearing method which is easily and quickly reversible (as long as you don't use a bb that's too tight). There are other ways of doing this that inserts a plugged t-connector in series with the hose. But however it's done, the sound is definitely an improvement over the stock setup.

I don't know much about the golf tee mod yet, but I thought this is supposed to be super easy, vs. the golf tee one you have to get under car and takes a while? I'd read about the code thing, but most people in the DIY thought it's a small one, and some even didn't have their dealer bring up the code during a service visit.

Yeah I know but the reason why I posted it here was because most of the E93 owners browse this more often, and knowing people like me, we don't go into the DIY section if we've already skimmed through it once. maybe every once in a while, but not often.

As far as the effect of the mod, it will throw a hidden code, but you can just reconnect the plug, shouldn't cause any trouble as all it is doing is just controlling the vacuum line for the left exhaust shutter. Anyhow, I'll just plug it back in later I guess?

It is a decent amount of difference, which I like. I'll try to get a vid for you guys.

Whether you go under the car or unplug the connector in the trunk, either method is extremely easy. However, personally I did a simple method of pinching the vacumm tube and zip tying it. it took me less than literally 10 seconds.

the code thing itself IS really small. no lights appear on the dash. the only thing is that the ecu will pick up the fact that the connection has been disabled. that is all. dealers probably wont make a fuss about it. hell, if you bring it in for a simple oil change they wouldnt even know unless they had some other reason to go through the ecu.

as for the effect, i hear it and the difference is quite noticeable especially during cold starts and the rev range up to 2500 rpm. There is a slight drone to the car when cruising around 2000rpm, but not annoying. obviously, after 2500 the flaps open anyway and the exhaust sounds the same as before. well worth doing it

I unplugged the connector, no VISIBLE error codes therefore don't really care if they are stored somewhere. Besides the car sounds AWESOME

Highly recommended mod whichever way you decide to do it.

when you go to the dealer and they hook up their diagnostic tool, a code will be shown....trust me, I did this the first time around and was then asked by my dealer if I had disconnected it....I fessed up!

now I just run a vac plug on both solenoid and hose and NO CODE for them to see.

No Codes

I have done this mod - no codes, in my opinion easier than tying the hose off at the exhaust actuator. I accessed the wire through the removable panel on the driver's side in the trunk - no need to pull pins. 5 second mod.

Did it as well when I go to dealership we will see if they notice or say anything! I'm willing to wait until April 2009 (next scheduled maintenance), unless something breaks before then!!! Knock on wood!

hoooooooleeeeeeeeey SHIET!

i just accomplish this on my 2013 e93 335is, and the sound thats being produced on top of the bmw performance exhaust is REALLY loud.

I think my neighbors are gonna come over and ask if I have a lion in the garage.

FYI - just take your time, do things slowly and review the components 2 times before starting the detaching.

Good luck E93 owners! and ENJOY!

THANKS OP the pics really helped, vid not so much...

I have had the similar mod done on my e92 and have gone back to the dealer several times for service. Never had the dealerships said anything to me about it. Even the SA complimented and said it sounded nicer....

Dont worry about it. If you would of made a new thread people asking about this mod people would be bitching about you not searching. You do a search and then comment on the thread and people bitch about you bumping an old thread. Sometimes you just can win. I dont really see how either is a bad thing. This is a forum, there are only so many new things to talk about so if we dont talk about the same things over and over what are we gonna talk about

it was more like this "my bad" (attached)

I would'nt per-say the guy was bitching nor was it in bad taste? but i just replied in a nonchalant way I suppose.

Yes, I did a thorough search on 2 forums and on youtube, and did not want to make an extra cabrio mod thread. I love this button

and I agree with you deathbunny, a lot of things are the same but there can be new ways to approach such topics and like you have said, I just wanted to share my experience so someone else like me in the future won't have to worry and panic about the process.

and its not like this part of the forum gets that much* attention anyways

gonna go on a limb here and say a bump was needed
