Fuel Gauge - My 1st problem!

Went yesterday to put a little bit more gas in the car. My initial reading as I pulled up at the pump was a little less than 3/4 of a tank. I asked for $20 premium. When all was said and done, I started the car and the gauge read a little less than 1/2 a tank!

This morning, it still is stuck on that reading. I think the range display is also wrong at 185 miles. Unless, of course, the gas pump sipped the gas out of my car instead of pump it into my car...LOL.

I had a similar issue where the gauge only would show half tank even if it was full. I have the same model as you so might be the same issue. They had to replace the whole gas tank to fix the issue :O

If I filled up my 2001 E46 when it had 3/4 of a tank the gauge wouldn't move until I drove around for a while. Then it would reach "full."

I haven't done the same thing with my E92 yet...

I suggest keeping an eye on it and hopefully it will accurately report when it's almost empty. At that point, re-fuel completely and see how the gauge reacts.

Good luck.

Self ownage at its best.

Let me Cliff:

He had 3/4 full of gas
Put in $20 worth of gas
He now has less gas than before, at 1/2 tank

3/4 > 1/2

To add my thoughts, I have had four BMW models over the years. Each one exhibited the same false reading when I would excessively over fill the tank. Z3, Z4, X5, and 335i. The gauge would indicated just shy of one half tank for approximately 60km. I recently did this again with the X5. I have come to find this a charming fault... but I am odd.

Well, the ride back this afternoon from work showed my gauge inching past the half tank mark toward the full direction. So, maybe tomorrow it will creep back to 3/4...LOL. And, by weekend, it will be a full tank. Hehe.

I wish it was really making gas instead of consuming it though. I also emailed my SA to see if he can get the car checked.

I had the same problem a couple weeks ago. Apparently I got a few responses that "every" BMW does this but I don't buy it since my E46 330 coupe did not in the 60k miles I put on it. Haven't filled up since but I now have just under a quarter of a tank so I will probably fill up tomorrow or the next day. We'll see what happens.

+1 Same thing happened on mine. Fuel level sensor inside the gas tank is broken. Go to your dealer. They will replace the whole gas tank under warranty. Apparently, its easier to replace the gas tank than to replace the sensor in it!

OMG...the whole tank? I'm dropping off the car this Sat. My SA asked me to fill up the tank today and see if the needle moves. I'm hoping it won't show empty after filling up....LOL.

Yep, the whole gas tank. Upside is that they gave me a 335i loaner for the whole day it took them to fix it.

I have a workaround. Just look at your fuel guage through a mirror, and it will then report a correct reading

Guys, I just noticed this happened to me this weekend...
My gauge reads 9/10th when the tank is full, and it stays that way for about 250 miles... After that it creeps down to about half a tank... Also, my MPG gauge is showing me getting 37mpg on the highway doing 85mph.
I have to watch my odometer to make sure that I fill the tank up before 350miles.

yeah maybe most of it evaporated once you opened the cap. Pressure error? but seriously it isn't that accurate. I more often look at my trip meter to decide exactly how much I have left, not to say I have tested straight empty but a marginal amount to say it is.

BMW just replaced my gas tank this past wednesday. Bring it in to your dealer to have it looked at. Had my car for 2 days and gave me and X3 loaner. They are aware of the fuel issues.

I just left a VM with my SA...
Do you think they'll give me a 5-series as a loaner if I tell them that I may be interested in purchasing one?
