I have 800 kilometers on my 2008 6 speed manual 335xi. Even without the car being fully broken in with 50% city/50% highway driving I am getting 11.5 litres/100 km or 24.5 miles per gallon.

In the city I generally go from 1st to second straight into 5th gear. The torque on this car is strong enough that relaxed driving easily allows me to skip gears if required. On the highway I follow the same procedure except I shift into 6th gear when I hit 100 km/hr or 60 miles per hour.

After my car is broken in I am sure my gas mileage will suffer from a heavier foot!!! but it is great to know that even with this power if you take it easy you can get surprisingly good gas mileage. In fact the gas mileage of my 2008 300 horsepower 335xi is almost exactly the same as my old 2006 255 horsepower 330i :-)

FWIW, I'm averaging close to 19mpg with somewhere around 50/50 city/hwy split.

I am however, not exactly hypermiling the car. I get 2-3 good 20-85mph blasts in it per day and tend to drive about 80mpg on the highway.

It would make sense if I drove it around town with an eye towards fuel consumption that economy would creep up to around 23-24mpg. Not bad considering premium fuel around where I am runs around $4.80-$5.09 depending on which gas station you bend over in.

Do you have a mandate to run ethanol where you are? Clearly the 10% ethanol mandate I have in CT, USA isn't helping since ethanol has only about 60% of the energy of gasoline. That's about 4% of one's fuel economy out the window for no reduction in gasoline price!

I only drive about 6 miles a day, but in extremely heavy traffic. I average about 13.5mpg, and can only get it up to 15-16mpg if I really baby the car. I sit at a standstill in traffic more than I am actually moving and I just sit there and watch the mpg gauge slowly drop. On the highway I can get 27mpg. Ultimately, I don't really care though because I added thr Procede to go fast, not save gas.

i have a e92 328i and my gas mileage is 15.1... what is wrong with my car? i dont constantly gas it or pop it into sport mode it sucks this much regardless.

city/highway 50/50 i get about 21.3mpg, which is damn good (and better than i was getting before i had all my mods).

In mixed driving I get about 26.5 mpg. I do step down the gas on occasion, but mostly drive normal. If I were to take it easy always, I'm sure it would top 27, maybe 28.
I'm talking about my 330.

Then you probably have v29.2 or v30...May the lord be with you!!!

No ethanol here in Vancouver........I am finding it a challenge to see what kind of gas mileage I can get. I find the 1 to 2 to 5th gear change great for gas mileage in the city and still very smooth.

This car and engine is amazing. I can take it easy and get 11 litres per 100 km or I can also take it for the occasional blast and do 0 to 60 in around 5 seconds

I've got the 335xi - step tranny. I am getting something like 20-23mpg. I'm driving mostly city like driving. Suburban areas of Central MD with some highway driving mixed in. I feel like i'm only getting around 360 miles per tank. I fill up once a week at least.

If i pop it into DS mode...well the mpg goes down to 15 or so (rough estimate), but boy does that haul arse.

Wish it was better, but you know what... the car is just a lot of fun to drive, so whatever.

I am driving with a step. Average around 20-23mpg so far. I don't want to drive a car like this and worry about my gas milage. I fill it up, and drive it to make it fun for me. I am not flooring it everywhere I go but I do usually pull away pretty fast from the rest of traffic at lights. Usually the highway portions of my commute saves me from the really low gas milage average since I am not a highway speeder type. I do enjoy the rush from 0-60+ though.

I also have the 335Xi w/6MT and was also getting 24 mpg in Europe. Since i have had the car stateside, the best I have been able to accomplish was 21.7 and that was long highway trip from SC to DC. In my normal commute and weekend driving I am only getting 21.3. The 10% ethanol in the local gas probably is not helping. I love the car, but I want my 24 mpg back!

i m just wondering why did u change from a 06 325i to a 08 335xi?? like i mean you only drove your car for 2 years right.. did u decide that 325i is not enuf power for u and sold your previous car at a grest loss (since it's only 2 years old!) or you finish your lease? (i don't fink bmw canada offer 2 year lease)

You guys must drive like 80 year olds. According to the computer it says I am getting 17.5 probably for the past year..but the computer is off..exactly how much..I dunno. I would say I probably get about 16 mpg with stop and go driving..very little highway.

This reason is one of the reasons that prompted me to buy a Miata to commute to and from the train station...and leave the 335i at home until the nights or weekends.

I managed 27 mpg down to San Diego last weekend, my grandmother would have been proud. Coasted as much as possible, kept off the throttle... but man it was boring. Anyway, I'm with you in city around 18-20 mpg.

I check my mileage on every tank and if you are trusting the computer here is what I find. With a 50/50 mix of city and highway the computer is usually about .3-.4 mpg optimistic which I consider to be pretty accurate, but when I drive mostly highway and think I got much better results I find the computer is more like 2.0-2.5 mpg high. Seems strange that it would be so different based city vs highway driving but that is consitently what I see. By the way I usually get about 20 mpg with the city/highway mixed driving and 22-24 mpg on mostly highway.

I actually traded my 2006 330i for my 2008 335xi. I bought my 2006 330i in July 2005 and traded it in July 2008 for my 335xi so I had it for 3 years.

The main reasons I traded my 2006 330i for my 2008 335xi were:

1) Wanted all wheel drive again, I had a 2002 330xi and prefer the improved traction in the rain and in the winter. I am also thinking of taking up skiing this year again.

2) Twin Turbo......the 330i had very good power but there is no comparison to the 335 engine

3) I have always owned my cars so I did not lease my car. After the $4,000 off from BMW Canada on 335xi's and a healthy discount from the dealer I paid the dealer $22,000 cash for my 2008 335xi after trading in my 2006 330i. Trading in my 2006 330i and paying $22,000 for a brand new 2008 335xi was too good an offer for me to pass up

Wear and tear, warranty, and free maintenance were also coming to an end also...... my tires were pretty worn also so considering 4 runflats are about $1,000 I consider my actual cash paid out to be $21,000 for the new car.

my friend has e46 3.0L. consumption is 16.5 l/100km

Strange, mine seemed better in Europe as well. With all of my drives over the Stelvio, San Bernardino and Col de Turini plus highway travel, I averaged about 25mpg if I recall. I remember getting over 400miles on a tank.

Now that its stateside, I'm not faring so well. With 70% hwy/30% city I'm getting around 21.5mpg indicated (which is actually .5-1 optimistic) with the occassional brisk acceleration, but really babying it when not. However, I did drive home, 100% interstate between 65-80mph with the meter reset and got 29mpg indicated. But I REALL REALLY babied the car to do this. Including throttling back when going uphill (sacrificing a few mph) and picking the speed up for "free" going downhill before the next incline in the highway.
