Steering Lock Issue

I have been experiencing from time to time the steering lock NOT disengaging when opening the car therefore, will not start. I know that this is a known problem with the early 2006 330s.

I dropped off my 06 330i for the first repair (which is the software fix) which I'm told by all that has had this done that it does not truely fix the problem just delays the "real" repair of replacing the steering column. Replacing the column removes the steering lock.

Service said that the software update can take from two hours to two days. What a joke if it takes two days just for software.

I'll keep you posted.

Upgrade Complete

The dealer finished the software in about three hours. They said after it, there were no faults or error codes. They said in a small number of 330s it might occur again and if it does, they will replace the column.

No problem yet, will post if we have to go to the next step.

I hope that takes care of the problem. What dealer did you use?

Fairfax BMW

No problems so far. However, most have had the same issue again in less than two weeks with just the software upgrade. Time will tell.

I had mine done last August and haven't had any problems with it since. My understanding is a sensor or actuator is changed and not the whole column. They also updated the software so there's really no way of knowing which actually fixed the problem. I'm not complaining.

My car is two years old, and I got my first steering wheel lock warning today. Since I'd read all about it, I knew I could just wait a while and try again, and it worked.

Still, if this happens again, I'm going to the service dept. It seems like people who have had this happen had it show up sporadically at first, then a bunch of times, then they get their steering column replaced. I have one of the "late model" 2006's, and I thought maybe I was immune to this problem, but I guess not. Keeping my fingers crossed I don't see it again -- or that I see it again before 50K miles.

My SA stated that it was a safety issue that needed to be fixed quickly.
