BMW assist & BT functionality

Must the BMW Assist subscription be maintained in order to continue BT handsfree dialing functionality?

No. The hardware is bundled with BMW Assist, but its functionality is totally unrelated to whether you have a BMW Assist subscription. I have a 2006 car with an inactive BMW Assist subscription, but my BT works fine.
