engine problems with 2005-2006 BMW X5 3.0i?

I have heard to stay away from the 3.0i because its not a good engine. I haven't heard any specific problems with it, just to stay away and get the 4.4i. I can tell they get about the same gas mileage but was wondering what the big deal is.

I've had 2 BMWs with the 3.0 engine and have never had a problem with either. I purchased an '07 X5 4.4 after driving the 3.0 and finding it underpowered. Given that the ride and power of the V8 is so much greater than the 3.0 six and given that the difference in fuel economy is essentially 1 mpg (which you will lose if you drive it aggressively), I can't see why you would consider the 3.0 anyway. But, the X5 sure does suck up the gas which is now over $4.15 per gallon for premium in California. Sure you don't want a hybrid? :-)

Why don't you post this question on the XBimmers forum, where people actually own X5s?

All questions answered here no problem...My wife has the 3.0si x5 (seven passenger, yes we have 3 small kids age 5, 9 , 11) and she loves it. Don't get me wrong, it is not going to win you any track records, but, for every day driving and getting the kids to school in bad weather or grocery grabbing its perfect. Now paying an extra 10 grand for a v8 and getting less (certainly not 1 mpg...that was pretty funny) gas mileage, that is only up to you, but, our x5 3.0 has been so far a wonderful car for the family....m2c
