JB2H to JB3 experience
First off, I want to say that Terry is awesome for shipping out this product to me so quickly. I asked him last Friday if any were available and he said he'll try to get it out by Sunday and sure enough, I got them in my hands via USPS on Tuesday...wow!
Installing the pinout version was a breeze. The color coding, the wire bundles, and easy to follow instructions made it much easier than installing the JB2 (long paragraphs). It took me about an hour between disconnecting the battery, installing the JB3, and reconnecting the battery. Nice. First thing I did was let the car warm up and I floored the car. My first impression was that it wasn't as head jerkingly fast as I thought it would've been. But I knew the car was adapting so I gave it a few more healthy WOTs to redline and the car started to noticeably pick up power. After doing a few 60-100 pulls on the freeway, the car felt much faster. However... Maybe my car is not fully adapted yet, but I kind of miss the crazy boost at low throttle...because now since the throttle/boost is linear, I feel like I have to floor it to give the engine any significant boost. I'm sure this is just me getting used to it from my JB2H days, but for some reason it makes it feel less responsive. For example, on the freeway, I used to give it half throttle and the car would haul in 6th / D. But now, the acceleration is more stock-like with the gearing not letting the car accelerate too fast in 6th / D going around 60 (w/ part throttle). But fear not, I know the power is there because as soon as floor it to the kick down button, the car races past each 10 mph mark faster than I've ever seen - all the way to near redline. This was definitely not the case with the JB2H. I think once I get used to the linear throttle/boosting, the car will feel much more responsive. Or maybe the car just needs more time to adapt? Because of this effect though, my first impression was, "ah, its not as fast as I thought it would be..." but today was only the first day, so I'll keep everyone posted on any changes. One thing is for sure, the car pulls HARD. Much harder and longer through the RPMs than the JB2H... when I punch it all the way. Sorry I don't have any dynos or a boost gauge to give you any solid numbers. BTW I also have the single BMS intake installed on my car. Overall a great product by a great vendor. |

congrats man and trust me you will love the JB3. for many reasons. You'll save gas, you have more power, the ride is now more smooth and your car at the same time is running safely. If you like the old feeling of the JB2H where you had this hard kick of power even with partial throttle, I think Terry is working on a more aggressive map that has more low end torque. So dont worry, just wait for some time and you'll get wat you want

I asked terry about this...I came from a jb2hh. He said in stock form even though you give it half throttle if you data log it the car is really giving full throttle at half. Bmw did this to make easy passing in 6th etc. But with a jb2 it is not only giving you 8lbs at half at throttle but 13 or w/e. This is what you think is giving you down low power. When in reality the computer is just flooring. However this same scenario is what a lot of people complained about with a tune and the jerky on off feeling. The jb3 uses throttle position for boost. But like you said the jb3 just screams up top where as my jb2 kinds fell flat on it's face after 4500

thanks for that explanation. i'm def still getting used to it...its not bad, just different. it's that perception that you're physically flooring it to get it to really move.
i was going for about a month and a half stock and i can tell you that the acceleration is indeed even smoother since your car doesn't jerk off the line with partial throttle. great stuff! |

increase in intake sound ??
Quote:
the sound is not louder per se, just that there is a more constant sound which sounds like low volume intake shhhhh... this sound is so noticeable that i even quick checked all my intake and vacum connections to see if something was loose. anyone else?? if not, then i have to remove my wheel well liner to make sure intake filter is still on 100%. thanks

i think there is...but then again i might have the same problem as you. my vacuum lines MIGHT be loose, but i know that constant sound you're talking about. I have a bms single so I know its not my intake. might be where the solenoid vacuum lines are. you can only really check w/ boost gauge or try soapwater on the lines?

i cannot tell if the low volume SSSHHHH is my UR intake making more noises from the JB3 or more turbo spooling sounds (again from the JB3). i did a quick check and nothing is loose, and my boost gauge shows nothing abnormal so i am reasonably comfortable right now....however, next week when i have more time i am going to tke a real close look to be sure nothing is loose. btw, i am at high altitude, so my boost is WAAAY different from yours. but what is your max psi and at what rpm does it start to taper?? please leave out the max psi BLIP you get when your AT shifts...just curious thanks

everyone with a tune should have a boost gauge IMHO....btw, find a good DIY and it takes only about an hour or so to do.
