All season performance or performance winter tires for my XI this winter? - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

Having a dilema, I live in Boston Ma and trying to figure out what I should go with this winter. My car is a daily driver and I want to run 225/40R18 or 235/40/18 on my stock zzp wheels.

Any thought or help would be greatly appreciated..

Winters will perform better in the snow. That said, I grew up in Boston and lived there for 25 years. I never had AWD or winter tires or any issues driving around and I skied every winter weekend in NH, VT & ME. I only used AS tires.

I got 18in Hankook Ice Bears W300, same size as the OEM and they worked GREAT in the Colorado winter last year. Deep snow, light snow, whatever. Got them for $850 installed

Don't even think about driving with the performance summer tires your car comes with from the factory. You will crash.

Since you are going to buy tires, might as well get real winter tires instead of All-Seasons.

Snows are preferred, all season tires with an xi are more than adequate, performance tires are not a good idea for winter.

Winter tires for the winter, period. Nomatter how many driving wheels you have, you still need cold weather traction when you want to stop in the winter. Performance or not is your choice.

Why do you guys keep saying no performance tires? That is not even one of the options he is proposing. The title is all season performance or winter performance.

no offense kel... but

bro... even scrolling down this section you'll find at least 3 similar threads.

perf. winters not only for added traction but also better stopping distance in snow... A/S will stiffen up quite a bit below 40 deg and let you skid along a little further than you might want to.

I have always run winter tires in the winter. The added confidence and traction in near freezing to freezing temperatures is terrific. I am glad to see that the OP decided to go this route.

If you have a summer set up, I'd go with performance winters - they are just as good as all seasons on everything, but better on ice, which is when you need that extra traction.

To all saying not to use performance summers in winter - even if it has been said 1000 times, it is worth saying again. In DC I see so many bimmers with stock summers in winter - someone has to explain to them that this is just as bad as DUI.

getting 19" winters...can't stand how soft the sidewalls are on allseason tires.

I bought the same set for my 330i, they are quiet, handle good for winter rated tires, treadwear rating is good, and they aren't expensive.
Been thru many blizzards, whiteouts, and had no problems.

i went with winters because the shipped price between AS's (conticontacts or eage f1) and dunlop wintersports (50$ rebate) 235/40 was only 150-200 diff and thats worth me feeling more secure.
