Why are exhaust so expensive?

I can understand how maybe some full systems could cost close to 1000$ but hell most cat-backs for our cars cost well over that, there has to be better options for those of us who want a nice exhaust note without paying whacky money for it. I mean the cost to benefit ratio sucks...6-8 hp for 1000$ my jb3 cost 800 and I got 60+ hp to the wheels. Mufflers and piping cannot be that expensive, there need to be some 600-700 dollar options out there.

It's called how much you are willing to pay, you paid 45 or 50k for you car, so most manufacturers think you will pay more for your exhaust than a guy with a Cobalt SS or SRT4 (and I guess they are correct in several cases). We also have full duals, so that also adds some money s most cars either don't have dual exhaust or like most of the japanese manufacturers, they cheat and just run one pipe to the back and then run a pipe from the single muffler over to the other side to a short dummy muffler with a tip on it - 100% for looks, but much cheaper to replace!

Look under the car and you'll see it's a dual exhaust. More expensive than a single...

Yes that is true...but does that mean that everything we pay for has to be expensive..I can see that you must have quite a bit of extra money lying around...either way didn't want this thread to go into a your a cheap person and you pay for what you get, rather just looking at what is offered most exhaust are just section 3 pieces..which is essentially a muffler with some pipes running out of it, 1000+ dollars is insane..and to the person who made that comment...my car is paid off, and it was with my own money that I work hard for every day, so wanting more for my money is being smart.

totally understand the concept of the dual exhaust, I have actually worked on and installed stuff on my car so have that down, either way didn't think that this thread would bring out a bunch of smart asses just though maybe some of the manufacturers would see the need for a cheaper exhaust option but as it seems why do they?

In short, yes that does mean paying more.

Aftermarket parts are generally priced corresponding to vehicle make and price. That's not going to change.

And for the record, I'm poor.

I have to agree...with a dual exhaust system the price is more expensive if you go with well advertised and branded exhaust systems...If you try out other small companies like CP-E for instance, the price is much lower...full catback for 1200!!

I wouldn't mind paying so much if the hp and tq increase was worth it. Most of these don't do squat-so they advertise the "exotic" sound of the exhaust. That includes the +$2000 oem bmw performance one! 5hp gain FTL.

well I have to say that the sound of my exhaust system is worth the 1200 hundred I paid...I think anything over that number would be expensive, so thats why I went with a company that is not really known in the exhuast industry...I mean if your really look at it, its a fabrication of metal and companies that charge anything over the 1200 hundred are WELL ADVERTISED brands which basically sells their name!! The choice is yours to decide what you want to do, but I have to say the car is so much more enjoyable to drive with a little deeper exhaust note added to the performance of the car...

I went thru three exhausts to find the one that sounded best to me. I wasnt looking for HP, I figured all would give about as little as the other. I did it for sound quality, and on my third try, for wayyyyyyy too much money, I got it. I kick ass sound with no drone, perfect!

Cheaper exhaust options would be nice no doubt.

It's mostly the markup the companies can get away with. The catback system I went with shows almost 3 times the distributor cost on the web!

Just do a muffler delete. It will give you a nice enough note and won't cost all that much. Plus you save a lot of weight When your warranty is out then you can just make it a full tbe with no cats. It may be a bit loud but you'll get mucho power
