Just went out and started it using jump leads, i checked the voltage through the dash board and its at 14.5v when running and i turned it off after 2-3 minuets and it dropped to 12.2v, when i went out earlier i had been sitting with the ignition on for around 3 minuets and then the yellow battery light showed up and then it failed to start so now I'm not sure if i do need a new battery or this just happened as a result of me sitting with ignition on ? plus the car docent really get used much, around 2-3 times a week, maybe better off investing in a trickle charger ?

Definitely source the exact battery that you need from the right sources, need to know if yours is an AGM battery or not. New spec should match or exceed current spec, ideally. Registration is needed, yup. I would source from BMW directly by giving your reg/VIN. Harry Fairbairn provide 15% discount via www.bmwforums.info (check the Harry Fairbairn section and post a request in there).

BMW will rip you a new one.

Find the spec and order it online. Huge savings to be had from the likes of tayna.co.uk

Just spoke to BMW on the phone and they couldn't tell what battery it was from the registration but they said if its black it is AGM 190 and if its white its just a standard battery and will either be 70amp or 90amp, i went out and checked and the battery in mine is white and 70amp so docent look like its AGM. i also asked them about having to register the battery to the car but he said that this only applies if changing from standard battery over to a AGM battery. Did you have to get your new battery registered when you replaced it ?

Coding and registration are 2 different things, coding different spec is correct info from what the guy told you but registration is required due to the IBS which needs to be told that you have a new battery so it can adjust its charging rate or whatever accordingly.

It needs to be registered with the IBS or it will get shagged in no time.

In another thread it was stated that you only need to register the battery on models with IBS.

Seeminly not all cars have it.

If the earth terminal connection has a black box on it with a small wire with blue plug on the end then this is the IBS unit.

Well you said you got a yellow battery warning, which might indicate you have it, as the car actually noticed the battery was flat.

When my battery was flat, it would barely even turn the engine, but i got no warning at all. No symbols or owt. Just a few really slow turns of the engine before the dash shutdown due to lack of power, reset itself and the car stopped trying to start.

If we look on REALOEM:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...46#61129255047

We can see that there are a number of negative terminals listed.

It also seems to show the list of option codes that add the IBS system.

I guess the simplest way is to just look at your battery and see if the current shunt is present on the negative terminal.

yep, best thing is probably to get the bits needed to register it yourself.

Either carly app and dongle, or the PC software and lead.

Will probably cost similar to what places will charge to register the battery, but means you've then got the kit for diagnostics in future.

just had a quick look at the carly app, yeah you are probably right enough last time i got a dash light put out in my old car the charged me 30.

Can the carly app be used via my mac book ? as i have a OBD to usb cable so i could connect my laptop but don't know how i would connect my phone ?

I'm needing a new battery as well, although not sure what battery I should buy. I already bought the carly device (got issues with them as been waiting a month for a delivery)
Any advice on which battery I should get?

Carly runs on your phone or tablet and connects using a special wireless ODB dongle. Carly sells a rebranded one, but you can get them on ebay for much less money.

The USB type interface is used with the BMW software which runs on Windows, so probably much faff to get it functioning on your macbook. I tend to have an old laptop i keep around for using on the car.

ah right so you don't need to use carlys own obd port, is it the bluetooth ones i should be looking at ? saw this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-5-Seri...YAAOxydB1ShTa8

Have a look at your current battery if its white then its just standard acid and if black then its AGM, then just check what Ah it is. Mines is a white 70ah, euro car parts has them for around 60 BMW want 90
