Here's what happens to your car at port and VPC after it’s shipped from the factory!

I emailed my CA to get a status on my E90 (departed on the 5th, scheduled to arrive in NJ on the 18th). He included the link below in his response, hope it hasn't been posted before ...

Did you ever wonder what happens at the port to your car after it’s shipped from the factory?

Damn cool link, thanks! This is my favorite part... "One of the perks of working at the VDC is that each of the 84 employees gets a free BMW lease (3, 5, x3, x5, z4, MINI). They are able to wrack up 15,000 miles on the car then return it for a new one. They can get multiple cars per year." How awesome is that!!

VW employees get very cheap leases on the damaged (and then repaired) vehicles, that are then returned to VW at the end of the lease and sold as "executive lease" cars.

I would assume BMW does the same. The employees probably get to choose from the damaged cars that are fixed at the VDC.

I have a buddy that is a longshoreman and sometimes works at Oxnard. Part of what he does is unload the cars from the ships. I think they drop them off at the VDC.

Great article. Now we know what the waxy stuff dripping out of the door jams is too!

Ahh, the leaky doors are solved. Always loved reading behind the scenes stuff like this.. gives you a much better picture of our car's journey to our garages.

It says that the paint is "baked on"......how do they do that with an already built car? Doesn't that cook the wiring and other parts?....or do they disassemble it? Cool link.

Stumbled across this old thread. Thought some members would like to know about the whole process at the port and VPC.

I have to disagree with the free lease. At BMW Manufacturing in Greer, SC the factory employees pay approx. $350.00 a month for leased, 3-Series, Z4, or X5. This includes everything, but gas and the vehicle is turned in every 6,000 miles or 6 months which ever comes frist. BTW, the BMW VPC for the southeastern region is also located within the plant at Greer.
