I just did the swap and the pictures really helped. I still had trouble getting the airbag out, however. Here a few further tips:
1) My 'holes' were covered with a thin film of vinyl that had to be poked through. 2) You need a fairly thin screwdriver. I had trouble getting mine to go all the way through to the airbag clips. It helps to jiggle the screwdriver fore-aft to stop it from 'catching'. 3) You don't need to release both sides simultaneously. Each side will just 'pop' out. 4) I wound up with an 'X-Drive' warning light when I re-connected the battery. I wasn't too worried about this -- as the car is going in on Friday for its annual service -- but the lights went away (and so far haven't returned) once I started driving. 5) I was hoping to use the screws that secure the radio switches from the old wheel to perform a similar function on the M-Tech wheel. I didn't wind up doing this, however, as the screws appear to be buried under the leather wrapping of the old wheel. The new M-Tech wheel feels great! |

Just switched my non sports wheel to m sports wheel. MFL works just fine. No need to reprogram either.

just out of curiosity, if you swap from a non-zsp steering wheel to a zsp or m steering wheel, can you use the multifunction switches over? I know you need to replace the trim and everything... but not sure if the switches are transferable.

the multifunction buttons from non-zsp is not transferable to the zsp wheel. you would have to get zsp multifunction buttons. 2 different kinds, one for non idrive and one for idrive.

thanks for the great pics
Thanks for the great pictures! Was working on getting the airbag removed and had a heck of a time until I came across your pics. After seeing your pics I had the airbag off in about 4 seconds! Thanks!

Awesome. Worked great for me. My screw driver was too small, needed a bigger one. Too bad it leaves permanent marks in your non-sport wheel.

It costs alot; even though i got my parts at a good VERY good price.
M3 stitched wheel- £140 Airbag - £185 Connecting line / m trim / multi function buttons / multi func screws - £165 Grand Total: £490 I've yet to receive my 'new' airbag- so i'm waiting to see if i have to scout out an airbag mounting bracket ![]() Edit: Its arrived- it hasnt got the bracket- i've rang BMW and they told me that the part i need comes as part of the wheel. So i'm now in argument with the seller of the wheel, as to where this part is. |
