DIY: How to remove the Non-Sport steering wheel airbag

As what some other members here on the forum posted on how to take the Airbag from a sport steering wheel, the non-sport steering wheel has the same principle but very a different style and approach...

1. As stated for previous DIY, remove you battery connection.
2. There is also a small hole on the back side of the steering wheel, you can see and feel it. (like the sport steering wheel)
3. Position your flat screw driver pointing at 11-12:00 and push it towards the inside (pic 1) the aribag will be released from one side.
Do the other side exactly the same pushing the screw driver inward.
4. The Airbag will pop out and you can release the clips carefully.

* Don't worry about the multifunction buttons, no need to remove it.

** If you are changing your non-sport steering wheel to a Sport steering wheel or an M sport, you need to have:

1. Sport round Airbag and airbag bracket (which you cannot buy separately from the dealer).
2. Multifunction buttons
3. Connecting line for the airbag
4. Steering wheel cover or an M sport steering wheel cover

You can refer to this site for part number:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...23&hg=32&fg=35

then follow Bavarian19's DIY on how to install a Sport steering wheel or an M sport wheel. Good luck!

If you cannot buy an airbag bracket from a dealer, where do you get it from?

I am pretty sure he meant that you can't buy it on its own, it only comes with the airbag...

I just did the swap and the pictures really helped. I still had trouble getting the airbag out, however. Here a few further tips:

1) My 'holes' were covered with a thin film of vinyl that had to be poked through.

2) You need a fairly thin screwdriver. I had trouble getting mine to go all the way through to the airbag clips. It helps to jiggle the screwdriver fore-aft to stop it from 'catching'.

3) You don't need to release both sides simultaneously. Each side will just 'pop' out.

4) I wound up with an 'X-Drive' warning light when I re-connected the battery. I wasn't too worried about this -- as the car is going in on Friday for its annual service -- but the lights went away (and so far haven't returned) once I started driving.

5) I was hoping to use the screws that secure the radio switches from the old wheel to perform a similar function on the M-Tech wheel. I didn't wind up doing this, however, as the screws appear to be buried under the leather wrapping of the old wheel.

The new M-Tech wheel feels great!

Many thanks, just swapped my standard wheel for an M Sport - your guide was invaluable.

Does the new MFL buttons on the sports or M wheels work ok with non-sports setup?

Just switched my non sports wheel to m sports wheel. MFL works just fine. No need to reprogram either.

just out of curiosity, if you swap from a non-zsp steering wheel to a zsp or m steering wheel, can you use the multifunction switches over? I know you need to replace the trim and everything... but not sure if the switches are transferable.

the multifunction buttons from non-zsp is not transferable to the zsp wheel. you would have to get zsp multifunction buttons. 2 different kinds, one for non idrive and one for idrive.

thanks for the great pics

Thanks for the great pictures! Was working on getting the airbag removed and had a heck of a time until I came across your pics. After seeing your pics I had the airbag off in about 4 seconds! Thanks!

Awesome. Worked great for me. My screw driver was too small, needed a bigger one. Too bad it leaves permanent marks in your non-sport wheel.

It costs alot; even though i got my parts at a good VERY good price.

M3 stitched wheel- 140
Airbag - 185
Connecting line / m trim / multi function buttons / multi func screws - 165

Grand Total: 490

I've yet to receive my 'new' airbag- so i'm waiting to see if i have to scout out an airbag mounting bracket

Edit: Its arrived- it hasnt got the bracket- i've rang BMW and they told me that the part i need comes as part of the wheel. So i'm now in argument with the seller of the wheel, as to where this part is.

can i get clarity on this as a member in one of the replies has said u can but u say u cant?

why would the multifunctional buttons be different fitment to those that go on a sport wheel?

they look exactly the same in size and appearance!!?

Anyone clarify any further on using non-sport multi-function buttons when upgrading from non-sport to sport? And if I have to get new sport multi-function buttons (and I don't have i-drive) I have to get the non i-drive version of the buttons? Would the i-drive version of the buttons work (meaning would the idrive button just be a "dead" button for me but the other buttons would work)? TIA!
