Hmm. This looks really interesting, especially because it's become so inexpensive. I had a Kenwood head unit in my old car and it worked pretty well, although the Bluetooth call quality (I think the mic) was not great.
Have you tried the Bluetooth functionality with the extra adapter? What's the quality like? |

I still like the main unit itself for running my Sirius and music via the supplied USB. I also like shutting the ashtray to hide the display. Since the USB is in my armrest, all you see is the knob in the cubby hole. |

Kenwood and Sirius Install BMW 328i
I used the install ideas in this thread. This took longer than expected... about 6 1/2 hours total. I bought a sirius + kenwood kit from Crutchfield for $89 + a $50 rebate so it only came to $40. I also tapped the shark fin wire in the trunk with a sat radio extension cable. Sound is great and it is as solid and clean as I could hope. You can still use the ashtray cover. No wires are visible. Electronics are under the passenger seat and travel with the seat when it moves.

Nicely done! And great that you were able to hide the wiring, that is key.
Which Sirius satellite system did you purchase to integrate with the KOS? Is it plug and play? |

I drilled a wire sized hole directly underneath the circle controller. Then I used the double sided tape. It worked much better than expected. I had to drill 2 holes. 1 for the display and 1 for the controller. I routed them both through the console and then down the carpet break under the passenger seat.

I ran a dedicated power wire for the preset power to the battery with an inline fuse. For the main power wire, I bought a junk cell phone car charger, cut off the end, and spliced in the power on the kenwood unit. It is plugged in in the console w the audio aux.

I finally installed this unit and it works pretty well for the price paid. Nice to finally enjoy an iPod without looking down or whatnot to change tracks/see what's playing.
I wanted to make this into an OEM look, so I bought an iDrive center console piece of trim and wrapped it in carbon fiber (to match my other trim pieces) and just bought the other iDrive pieces from an Online parts supplier (everything for the center console trim minus the actual iDrive mechanical knob). A little Dremel work and some sound deadening placed on the backside of the trim to secure the Kenwood controller makes everything fit nice and tight. I ran all the wires through the center console trim back into the trunk where it's mounted. Everything works great. Took a Saturday from start to finish, otherwise definitely no complaints.

Relatively cheap too! Quick question, does this charge a connected ipod? |

Yes, it sure does. When the unit is on it powers the iPod no problem. So far, no problems with the Kenwood. Every once in a while it will get stuck and say "reading". I learned that you usually just have to turn off the Kenwood and turn back on. It has a "hand mode" feature as well where you can manually change tracks instead of using the rotary dial. I do this sometimes when I am looking for a specific song.
