When you buy a new car off the lot, how long do you typically keep it?

Just curious to hear from those of you that have bought brand new cars off the lot (or ordered, of course). How long do you typically end up keeping your car? Please only answers with regards to BUYING a brand new car, not leasing. I know I buy a new car with intentions of keeping it 4-5 years, but with 2 of my last 3 cars, I only kept them 1 year each before I got the itch for something different, even though when I purchased them I had intentions of keeping them a long time. I'm sure other people have lifestyle changes or get bored with it sooner than they expected or something new comes along or whatever, but Im sure some of you end up loving them or pay it off and like having no payments, and end up keeping them for years more than originally intended.

How long do you end up keeping your car historically when you buy a brand new one?

My last 4 cars went like this:

1998 BMW Z3 - 1 Year
1999 Toyota 4Runner - 1 Year
2000 BMW Z3 - 6 Years (to present)
2007 BMW 335i coupe - put downpayment down, expect it in Sept.

Out of the 8 cars I bought in the last 10 years I've kept 1 vehicle longer than 3 years. I plan on keeping this E90 for a long while, I'll probably let my kid have it when they're old enough to drive.

though im just a college student, my family buys cars and keep them either 2-3years or 6+years. Our commuter cars tend to get over 150k+ miles in 5years so end up keeping it for about 7-8years and give it away to a family member

1996 Honda Civic - 10 years

Only money I put into that car besides standard maintenance was for new tires, repaired CV joints, and some new piping in the exhaust system where it rusted out. I would still be driving it if my mom's car didn't break down recently.

Hopefully the new 330i I ordered (currently sitting at the port of Bremerhaven) will be as troublefree. I plan on owning it for the next 10 years.

1986 Mazda 626 10 years
1996 Honda Accord 10 years+, its now the family car for my son to use
2006 BMW 325i, it better last 10+years

Me, I cant figure out who can afford to get a new car every 4 or 5 years , whats up with that ?

Of course I pay cash for my cars, none of this lease stuff for me.

I didn´t drive my last cars over a longer distance, the only one, I drove longer, was my first car, after that they were only max. 2 years in my hands!

But my presently coupé should keep more than 3 or 4 years in my ownership,
so I´ve to spare lot of money for a new (used) car. I hope the E46 wouldn´t
make a lot of (big) problems, but I´m optimistic.

Excellent point! I still have my 97 Maxima since it still drives well and I put a ton of mods on it and I would only get a couple of thousand if I sold it. Never had any problems with it and still a great car to have. I don't know if the Bimmer will last that long but I plan on trying. It gets too expensive to keep losing money buying new cars with mortgage, college another truck loan and trying to retire in one job. Oh yeah the military is harsh with all the moving. I had $4k worth of damage to my other car moving to Hawaii. I think I'm going to have to make a road trip from Cali to wherever I go next.

6 Years Like Clockwork

Hmmm.... just coincedental, but my history is:

'82 Honda Civic
'88 Toyota Corolla
'94 Volvo 750
'00 Subaru Outback
'06 BMW 325 xiT

And, the trade ins have all been much better than $1500 - I almost got that for the '82 Honda Civic. They all had about 90K miles and I got $11K for the Volvo (piece of junk) and $9500 for the Subaru.

It's certainly easier on the budget when you can put 25% into retirement accounts, save for kids' college, pay a mortgage, ... and not work 70 hours a week.

So, what will my 2012 BMW look like (or will I continue my lack of brand loyalty?)
