Dealer won't pay! Advice?

I bought my car as a certified preowned from the BMW dealership. Also have full original warranty until late 2015. Well yesterday I went to take the wheel off, and as received from BMW, there was a locking nut. The key was in the trunk. I used it properly and the key broke inside the lug nut and you can't get the broken piece out. They said they will most likely have to drill. Quoted me over 240 dollars to drill it. Said its not covered. But this is how I received the car from the dealer, with the locking nut on there. How can I get them to do it under warranty or just pay for it as the dealer clearly had a bad key and/or lug nut?

i'm sure you can take it any reputable shop to take off the lock nuts. be much cheaper

If I read this right, the Key broke and not a part on your car. If that is the case the key will more than likely not have it's own warranty and I doubt is covered under your manufactures warranty (certainly not under CPO) - as a result, their analysis I believe is correct.

No absolutely not. I reviewed the car with the locking nuts on the car meaning I must be a supplied with a WORKING key. They key broke because either the key was brittle or they have the nuts of too tight.

Put it this way- if I brought my car to BMW for a tire rotation, it would have happened to them too. Then who would have paid for it?

Even if a part is faulty, digging around certainly voids warranty, at least that's how warranty has worked for everything else

um...how did the key break? like, what caused it to break? you simply pushed
the key into the cylinder and it snapped? you turned it and it snapped? it was
difficult to turn and it snapped?

I believe the CPO warranty covers (among its covered items list) defective
parts. How was the key defective? Simply by breaking?

I'm not understanding why you feel they should cover this. Regardless of warranty, you broke the key and got it stuck in there. Your example doesn't help matters, either. If they broke it, they would pay for it. You broke it...so you pay for it, no?

Why would they NOT pay for it? It's not like I added locking nuts to the wheels. It was THEIRs and therefore should not be given to me defective. It's like selling me the car with the window up.. I buy and drive off and roll window down and now it won't go back up..... Just because I rolled the window down its my fault? No.

Well the window is part of the car, and is covered under the warranty, since it was made by BMW and is a BMW part. Have you tried another dealership in the area? If they're are iffy about it just tell them they will gain a new customer if they help you out.

Because they didn't break it, YOU did. I don't see why you aren't getting this. You can't prove anything beyond the fact that you broke it. You'll have to eat the cost unless you find another dealership or this one pays out of goodwill.

By the way, your examples are wholly inaccurate and not helping your case.

When I first read the scenario I thought we were arguing that BMW broke it while doing maintenance and they want you to pay for the broken lug to be drilled. Unfortunately, since you broke it, its going to most likely be on you. This is one of those times that you just have to pony up the cheddy.

It will be seen as was user negligence. If you would have over torqued something and broken the bolt, they would not cover that under warranty and you would have to pay out of pocket. This is the same scenario. You broke the key while working on your car - there is no way to prove the Key was 'defective' or if you did something so grossly negligent that the key broke (such as; jumped on the socket with all your weight).

put your panties back on and just go buy a socket that is slightly tight to fit the oem bolts and get one deep enough to cover it. a 6pt would work great, and then hammer it over the bolt and then just take it off.

simple.

Had a similar problem on my kid's Jetta. Took it to my wheel/tire guru and he very carefully welded a lugnut onto the locking one. Took a socket and screwed the whole mess out. Had to do all four wheels because the key was ruined on the first attempt.
He didnt harm the wheels at all which was pretty amazing because the locking nuts were pretty far inside the wheel holes. Charged me $40.00 and I had to get four more studs.

I don't think CPO covers it, just as it doesn't cover if your power steering pulling hits the subframe and causes $3,700 worth of damage, but let's be reasonable, should the OP had put the car on a lift when he bought it, to be sure the nuts weren't over-torqued to begin with? Hopefully all of us will earn enough coyne to move on the Porsche. There are so many stories here of dealerships who do not extend any courtesy to clients.
