Should I change oil ?

My car is now at 10,500 miles. Since I had not changed oil since I got the car, I feel that it is not as smooth as before.... should I spent $70 to change oil now, or wait for another 4,500 miles for the free oil change ?

If I change now, the free oil change becomes kind of redundant, isn't it ? since the oil will only be used for about 4500 miles.

I would change now. I changed mine at 1301, then again around 8500.

Change your oil every 7000 miles, and get a free oil change 1/2 the time

I was told by a BMW tuner here in Houston every 5000 if you plan on keeping the car

I have 12,000 miles right now, and called the BMW dealership. They told me the cars are made to go 15,000 - 20,000 miles before changing the oil. He said that spending $90 before then would be a waste of my money. But it feels just plain wrong to go that long without changing the oil. It's frustrating hearing so many different things.

My wife's 1999 4-Runner's owner manual states the oil should be changed every 7,500 miles, yet at Jiffy Lube, I got scolded for waiting that long. They told me it should be changed every 3,000 miles. No exceptions.

You only got 4500 more miles to go, dont do it.

Get your free oil change at 15k, and change it every 7500 miles.

No, they won't do it early without a fee. If the cars says it's not time, they will charge you the $90.

I just called bmw of arlington and bmw of sterling and they both said it would cost somewhere between $200 to $250 for an oil change. Where are you saying only charges $90?

Wow! That's expensive. I guess it pays to live in Kansas.

I called Baron BMW here in Kansas City, and they told me an oil change would be $90.

i think that's a complete oil change/analysis/fluid/etc.....

regular oil change.....filter & oil only should be around $80-100

Change it. I was like you and kept waiting for 15000, but it never came. The indicator count down at almost 20kmiles for my first oil service. I'll never do it again. Do one in between the preset number. I think BMW preset oil service totally bullshit. IMO, it should be 1 year or 10kmiles whatever comes first.
diy, man. It's easy and cheap. A guy from a auto service center can do it for me for $10-$15 labor and I buy my own filter/oil. He only does it after hour (after 5pm or weekend and the money belongs to him) because during the business time, his boss will charge me at the full price.

I would also change it now.

This is a matter of risk management. Most cars will run 100,000 miles using the scheduled service. Some will not. Off spec oil, crankcase ventilation problems and unusual driving conditions are some of the things that could happen that would kill your oil prematurely.

Obviously your long term risks are reduced by more frequent oil changes. The problem is putting numbers into this situation--no one has them. However a quick google of "oil sludge" will motivate you to be a little on the conservative side.

In my case I plan to run the car well past 100,000 miles. I don't want valve train problems (or anything else). Therefore I am going to be changing mine at ½ the BMW recommendation, using BMW spec oil.

And none of my cars have ever been, or ever will be, in a Quacky Lube [legal note: generic term, not refering to any specific chain, store or business]. They can be OK, and they can be very, very bad. This is another case of risk management.

IMO.

How many more miles does the onboard tell you that you have until the service interval??? When I had 10K miles, it was still reading 9K. So...I changed it right then, knowing that the dealer would not change it at 15K for free if the on board tell me that it is not time. Therefore...if the onboard tells you 4K to go until your service interval...then I guess you wait for the freebie. If it says you have +8K...don't count on the dealer giving you a free oil change just cuz you hit the "15K" mark.

I now have 14K miles, and the onboard says 4500...so I guess the next one will be at 18.5K miles...which will be about 8.5K miles since the first one. I think I will do it about every 7500-8500 miles from then on.

I changed mine at 9000 just to be on the safe side and paid $75 if I remember correctly. After my next free service, I will DIY in between, it's quite simple.
