If the engine is going to, blow, don't you want to have it happen right away ? BMW doesn't want it to happen while it is under warranty.
You present an interesting theory. But it seems to me that BMW has the most to gain by having us break in our engines in a way that maximizes performance, reliability and longevity.

Granted -- all engineering involves trade-offs. It's in BWM's interest to avoid blown engines during the warranty period and afterwards. Therefore, their recommendations are probably on the conservative side. But if we could obtain significantly better performance by following a more aggressive but safe break-in process, it's in BMW's interest to recommend it. BMW spends billions of dollars on R&D trying to maximize performance, reliability, economy and longevity. Wouldn't they change a few words in the owner's manual if it could get us signficant performance gains?

Why would a company like BMW invent and continually improve the sports sedan and then give us bad advice on how to break it in?

The factory told me 1000 miles without breaking 4000 RPM or 100 MPH. I did that in the forst 36 hours.

don't think bring the engine above 4000rpms will do any harm, just drive it smoothly and fluid (especially if you have a manual).
