Fuel Octane Discussion

I am regular at Caltex, simply because they have a station cross my street...
I learned from them the last day, that all gas petrol in HK is 98 Octane
and I learned from BMWHK, that our cars would need a Minimum of 91...
Never mind... now, does anyone know what is the difference between The platinum techron fuel & the Gold Techron fuel at Caltex, and if it is worth filling up platinum?

Applicable also to others like Shell, their "ordinary" formula option is already good enough for the sake of pure-ness and octane number for our E9x. the "superior" option is with their own particular add-ons mostly on cleansing effect rather than on power concerns.

Mind if I asked how you found that out, and is that RON or MON? I've been digging around the Caltex and Shell website for months to no avail... the octane number does mean a real difference to tuned engines...

Thanks... it's funny how the gas companies over here don't advertise that at all.

I run after Caltex, calling almost everyday, until I got to the right department (I think) and they confirmed that 98 RON is the standard in HKG.
I than called OFGAS to confirm that RON 98 is the standard in HKG.
What I was not able to get, is the difference between Gold and Platinum @ Caltex, though I agree with little_croco, this has to do with cleaning agents rather than Octane

Platinum is a RON 98 fuel and Gold is a RON 94-95. On our E9x the fuel cap labels min RON 91 which actually means RON 95 in Hong Kong. In actual fact if your car is purely stock standard Gold would be fine and possibly 98 when the temperature gets hotter.

However there is a difference between Caltex fuel and Shell fuel. Caltex is a clean fuel. It gets a rating of RON 98 because of the certain cleaning agents the fuel is processed meaning the fuel is burned cleaner and leaner. Shell is a performance fuel so it has a octane additive in it to maintain a constant 98 burn.

I don't quite understand your statement, can you plz elaborate. a 98 RON is a 98 RON, no need to add a booster (is what you mean by booster?) to keep it 98

Shell on its website, claim that V-Power can be used for any car that runs unleaded fuel, using powerful cleaning agents and Friction Modification Technology (FMT); very similar claim to Caltex and its Techron... I am not an expert here, but a 98 is a 98; and if you need performance, you might want 100 or 101 and I am not sure if this is available in HKG

you're right, we had 95ron back in early 90's, but now we only got 98ron as standard.

other than the price, the only difference between regular and v-power is that v-power contains much more concentrated detergent to prevent/remove carbon deposits from inside the engine, that's it.

btw, shell used to add ethanol(sp?)to boost up the octane rating, but not now, due to high cost and compatibility.. sth like that.

edit: you can even get 104ron in hk, but it's pretty pricey.

I think there is a missconcept here. RON is not equal to a figure in MON; The 2 measurement for Octane is RON & AKI.
Having said that, RON (Research Octane Number) which correlates best with low speed, mild temperature knocking conditions.
MON (Motor Octane Number) correlates best with high speed and high temperature knocking conditions.
For a given gasoline, RON is always greater than MON. The difference between the two is called the sensitivity of the gasoline.
This sensitivity is affected by the by the gasoline chemical composition chemistry used among different gas companies.
AKL on the other, widely used in US is calculated at [(RON+MON)/2]

ron and mon, just different type of rating and testing method, ron will be about 10 points lower than ron, just like ps and hp if you know what i mean. anyways gas stations don't use mon as a octane rating, only ron or (r+m)/2 (in usa, and some parts of canada)

Sorry to bring this old thread back into discussion, but if the RON numbers on both Shell FuelSave and V-Power are the same, can someone explain to me why evidently V-Power fuel creates better acceleration and fuel economy? I know its not only psychological or a placebo effect ...
