Nope, that will be me. Waiting to hear back from 2 companies regarding the ECU upgrades that they have already done with E90's... The best DIY EVER will be hopefully coming soon. :rocks:

First off, none of you will be first with the "conversion", that title has been taken in some regards... LOL.

Secondly, Long, I am suprised BMW used a thermally active adhesive on the rear lights, but not on the front. (Which makes removing the amber reflector impossible) If you bake the taillights in an oven, at about 190 for 10-15 minutes (make sure they dont hit the heating element!) they will also come apart pretty easy. If you do this, you can simply stick them back together, reheat, force the seal a little, reheat, push them together some more, and the bond will be as good as when you started.

Ive done this on MANY headlamps in japanese cars, works every time.

well, no one is claiming this is the 'FIRST IN THE AUTOMOTIVE WORLD", but I sure believe this is the first on E90's taillights, prove me wrong otherwise.

this tailight does not have the thermally active adhesive. i tried it all. if they were like honda headlight, they would have came off easier. try it out yourself.

If the adhesive isnt thermally active, then how did boiling them assist them coming apart? I cant imagine the adhesive to be water soluble, or is it?

The adhesive does not have to be water soluble. The boiling water temp is enough to make it soft without melting the hard plastic.

I actually saw another DIY elsewhere that discussed placing a plastic light unit (minus the electronics) in an oven at around 300 to 350 degrees for a specified period of time. This allowed the glue to get tacky enough to separate the adhered surfaces.

As you can see in long's pics, the proof is in the pudding (or in the soup pot).

I think you missed something.

-Long posted that he boiled apart the lights
-I said he should have baked them rather than boil them to get them apart, so the adhesive could be reused
-He said baking did not work (therefore implying that heat alone was not sufficient to disassemble the rear lights)

and 350 is way to hot for the any plastic in the oven, the plastic will begin to deform even at much lower temps (usually headlamps can come apart baking at about 180-200 tops)
