The SHO is back!

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/11/o...rd-taurus-sho/

Quote:
Whereas the original SHO used a high-revving 220-hp 3.0L V6 (later a 235-hp 3.4L V8) developed and built by Yamaha, the new SHO's advanced engine turns a relatively small 3.5 liters of displacement displacement and a lot of pressure into 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 ft.-lb of torque at 3,500 rpm. That makes this version of Ford's 3.5L EcoBoost V6 the most powerful one available with 10 more horsepower than its other applications.

I like it. I would never buy it, for various reasons, but I like it.

^ Ford's graph doesn't make sense. The official stats for peak tq occurs at 3500 rpm, but looking at their graph, it looks like the engine's making peak tq starting at 1700rpm and staying there until ~ 5700 rpm

HAHAHHAHA that's the funniest graph I've ever seen. Peak torque from 1700-5500. Perfectly linear power delivery.

Honestly though, this is the best Ford sedan I've ever seen (stateside).

I got the image from Jalopnik. Here's the post:

http://jalopnik.com/5151498/2010-for...s-torque-curve

The post links back to here:

http://jalopnik.com/5147709/2010-for...leeper-awakens

Here's the relevant passage from that post (emphasis mine):

The new SHO boasts the highest level of tune so far announced for the Ecoboost V6 — 365 HP and 350 lb-ft of torque, going above and beyond the previously rated 355 HP in the 2010 Ford Flex and 2010 Lincoln MKS. The more important part of those power figures is where it comes in at, with peak torque starting from 1500 RPM and topping out at 3500 RPM. Shoot, that's almost in diesel territory. Ford isn't being bashful about this new SHO either, boldly claiming the Taurus SHO will outperform the BMW 550i while returning 25 MPG on the highway and coming in at a reasonable $37,995 price. Those are certainly fightin' words.

The post includes the official Ford press release, which has this (again, emphasis mine):

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 also uses twin turbochargers, as opposed to a single unit. The reduced size of each turbocharger results in reduced internal inertia, allowing this advanced engine to avoid the "turbo lag" often prevalent in earlier-generation turbocharged applications. From the driver's seat, the rewarding result is linear power delivery across a broad torque band from 1,500 through 5,500 rpm. Peak torque building quickly off idle ensures responsive acceleration from a standing start.

So there's some contradictory information at play here...

For that price, and what you are getting it really isn't that bad of a deal.

that graph makes no sense. if it is accurate, that means at 3k rpm it will have less than 200 hp and it looks like it will drop off steeply before that. it almost looks like a graph of one of those overboosted, tiny displacement 4 bangers the way the hp line ramps up so quickly. the tq line looks juicy though... almost looks too good to be true.

i call BS on the graph!

360+hp, twin turbo, all wheel drive, 38k. sounds competitive.

It looks a lot like the graphs BMW put out for the N54. The torque curve is so flat because of active boost management to keep it that way. Just like the N54, once the tuners get hold of it and start exploiting some of that overhead, the thing will probably make a ton of power for cheap.

Here's an actual N54 dyno chart, and it's not all that different. The press releases are just smoothed out more.

I think it looks pretty good. It's nice to finally see American companies make something I'd seriously consider buying. GM's Caddy CTS and Pontiac G8 are great cars and now Ford will have a sports sedan that can compete. It's too early to tell how fast this thing is going to be, but it's bigger, costs a bit less, and might be able to blow the doors off of a 335i. If it's refined and handles well, this may be the car to get.
