Car would not start!

When I tried to start my car the other day, it would not start and I got a msg on the I-Drive that said "ELV move steering wheel"  . It also displayed a symbol of a steering wheel with a box superimposed on it that had the numerial 1 in it in the info center display. Anyone experience this before? What does ELV stand for?

I haven't experienced anything like that on my E90 but from previous experieces on my other car I can tell you it's probably nothing major. I guess sometimes when the steering wheel is left in a certain position, the car will not start and I've encountered this on many different occasions and on different cars. Try moving the steering wheel while you push the start/stop button. Anyways that's how I would get it started and it always worked. Good luck.

Yeah that is your steering lock function. When the wheel is locked it disables the ignition until you jiggle the wheel.

ELV
Electronic lock Valve?? lol.

Damn.

I just started having the same problem about a week ago. It happens about every time I start the car. I just thought it was an idiot alarm. I'll have to get that checked out.

Funny, my car is 12 months old and I never had that problem until last week! I tried jiggling the wheel, but to no avail and had to get out of the car, lock & unlock the doors to 'reboot' the system, before it would start

For about the last 2 months, sometimes my car won't start. No alerts, but when I hit the start button, no crank.
I have CA so I don't insert the key in the dash. Even so, I tried the key in the dash, but still no crank. When that happens I notice that the brake pedal feels "flat", or all the way down with no resistance. If I press the brake while pushing the start button, then release the brake and step on it again it cranks fine.
Sorry if thread jacking, just my experience with no start.

BTW Googled ELV and found this site that lists some BMW Tech acronyms:

http://www.mbmw.com/bmw_technical_acronyms.htm

I had this exact problem fixed last week. Dealer replaced steering wheel column. Expect 2 days at the shop. It's a known problem. I disconnected my battery hoping the error would reset. Nope...easy call...took it to the dealer the next day.

Yesterday my car wouldn't start -- thinking same issue. The steering wheel lock mechanism made slightly different sounds than normal, and the start sequence would not begin when I pushed the button. I played with the ignition button and steering wheel for 30sec and got it to clear. I could reproduce it later that evening. Today, everything was fine. I'll monitor it and if it happens again call the dealer.

The exact error was:

(icon of a steering wheel with a little lock in the indicator display)

got the icon in both yellow and red -- electric steering wheel lock jammed (yellow) or malfunctioning (red).

see middle of p.143 in the owners manual

I've gotten the same error for a couple of weeks. It's happened maybe 10 times off and on. I've gotten the yellow and red warning lights. It's happened twice this week so i'm going to call the dealership and try to get them to look at it since they need my 330i for an oil change soon anyway. Any idea what could suddenly cause this to start happening? The car is 13 months old, with 18k on it.

Take it to the dealer ASAP, fixed cost free. If no loaner, ask for free rental.

It's amazing that this thread popped up again. I just started having this problem on a few occasions over the past week or so. At first I thought it had something to do with the remote tag for my condo (small key tag that gives off a signal that unlocks the parking garage door). When I removed it from my keychain, the car started up.

However, there was another instance where removing the key tag did not correct the problem and I had to use my wife's key (thankfully, she was in the car with me).

I have a service appointment this upcoming week for another problem, so I will mention this when I go.

The steering wheel lock failure is well known on the E-90 series. The steering wheel column must be replaced. This is at least a 2 day adventure, and you should get a loaner. Once replaced, no further problems...good luck

I'm having the same problem. I have about 17k miles on my car. Anyone know exactly what is going on? Is it a defect or is it something I did?

I've got an appointment setup now. Will post any unusual experiences. In all likelihood it is a part with a design or manufacturing defect, not any fault of the driver.

Got it checked out at the dealer.
The dealer said they ran tests, but could not find anything wrong with it.
So I went home and when I tried to start my car again a few hrs later, the same day I brought my car in to the dealer, it FREAKING wouldn't start again.
Called the dealer and he said to bring it in again. Why are they dicking around with me.. JUST freaking replace what needs to be replaced!!!! I don't have the freaking time for this crap!!!
