lowering xi

I've read recently on the e30 forums that lowering an xi or ix model is not recommended. why is this can someone explain? they say it will mess up the drivetrain?

Do you remember which forum that was in? The rumour is that there isn't enough clearance for the transfer case for the OEM sport package suspension on an e90. Similarly, I would be concerned about such damage resulting from non-OEM springs that are intended for the Xi (i.e., will they really withstand hard driving without causing similar damage)...

Re the transfer case, I'm not about to try and pass myself off as an expert in this area. All I know is its very important AWD component used to transfer power to the wheels. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfer_case for further info. If you are really interested in lowering an Xi car, you should look into the three or more threads already in the suspension section. Several people have already spent a significant amount of time investigating options and calling up parts suppliers. You would probably find these helpful. Also, contrary to my pessimism in the earlier post, and as manufacturers are working on specific Xi spring solutions, you may want to have some faith in the market system-- that their products work without causing damage or else goodwill in their brand will go down, people wouldn't buy from them, etc.

My E46 Xi was lowered for a couple years. I had no trouble with any drivetrain components. The car was also autocrossed for three years. I used Dinan stage one suspension parts.
Yeah, yeah, I know it's not an E90, but the same principle I think would apply. Sold my E46 two weeks ago and I plan on lowering the E90 Xi when products come available.

I lowered my 325xiT with ACS springs, not only that, the dealer did the install without any issues. Just make sure to use springs for the xi, standard E90 springs will not give you a level lower and add to much preload.

Drives great, and the ACS springs are made for stock BMW shocks (dampers). They are progressive and made by Eibach. A little softer initially compared to most lowering sport springs, which is nice really, but once the load up, they are much better that stock.

Where did you buy the springs from? Did you buy them from a BMW dealer? How much did you pay? Thanks for letting me bombard you with all these questions. I'm getting kinda desperate to lower my car since the H&R's seem to be a ways off.

I don't think so. I bet they are pre-selling them or they are for euro market cars.
I called H&R last week to get an update about the "container" that they were to be getting in. Previous calls to them resulted in them not knowing if the 50494 springs were in that container. My recent call to them found that they are not. So, we Xi owners still wait.

getagrip,
What's with the listing for an E90 xi sport kit on H&R's website? Did you get the impression they're listing the parts prematurely?
