folding mirror

I have the Prem. package which includes fold up mirrors. Does anyone know why BMW did not make the mirrors go up auto when you put the car in park? If you have it the option and you park, and remember LOL you are going to place them up anyway so no one hits them. Than on top of that, they make them come down when you start to drive. Just a question that I can't figure out why the drafting board did not think of this.

Because every time you park you don't need the mirrors necessarily going in? I got a chip that I can do it from my keyfob make them fold in. But I like how at 30 they open themselves. Because i forget a lot of the time, until i go to make a lane change and realize I can only see myself haha

That's the thing, you should fold them in every time you park. You got the option use it!! LOL Besides as soon as some punk breaks them or chips them up you would be the first to be pissed and say damn I even have the option. I use mine ever time I go out even when I park a million miles away

I only use it once a while when I park in my own 2-cars garage, other than that, I rarely use it, not even in the car wash, because I want them to clean my mirror.

Only if you have the factory alarm, when locking it will auto fold and when unlocking it will auto unfold...the dealer can program this..

I'd rather have people sort of use them as "flags" and bump into my mirrors when my car is parked than bang into the side of my car. The only time I ever use them is when I am parked on the side of the road so I wouldn't them to fold in everytime.

Maybe they don't auto fold because they may freeze in cold areas

folding in mirrors

my guess is that the company programed the mirrors to open when the car is moving for legal liability reasons.

Personally, after parallel parking, I use the mirror to make sure there are no cars coming up that are going to take off my door if I open it. If the mirrors auto folded, it would get on my nerves.

they're nice, I just find it a habit now to fold them in. It would be nice automatically, but I don't touch the keyfob....so useless for me....CA ftw!

The point is -- why didn't they make it an OPTION to autofold (e.g., daytime-running angel eyes, etc.). We would all agree that having a choice would be nice.

Yah you should leave it unfolded as a flag so no one hits the side of your car. They make think the have more space then they do if they don't see any mirrors and park closer to your car and open the door and hit your door.

I love mine, use them every single time. It would be sick to do it with the keyfob though.

I forgot about this option until this thread. I think I have used mine once in the 20 months I've had the car.

+1 x 10^6 The only time I folded them up when parallel parked, I was so annoyed that I couldn't see traffic coming. Now, folding when I lock it is another story. But personally I think the cars with folded mirrors look a little gay and are inviting trouble.

+1.

I fold them only when I park on the street. In the parking areas, I prefer to leave them unfolded because other cars park sometimes very close when you have them folded (side note: it's rather difficult to enter in a 3 from the passenger side). I also think it would be dangerous to have them unfold automatically when you open the car. What if you're close to a wall or another car ?

So the factory setup is perfect for me. But I agree BMW should provide the setting to fold them automatically when turning off the car as I understand some people would prefer to have this possibility. But that's on the (long) list of improvements BMW should provide to the owners.
