BMW Perfomance Exhaust Installed ++++

I've owned my 2008 335xi E90 for a little over a yr, and at first wanted to keep it stock, but performing at it best. i was the second in line to get the V32.1 up graded BMW software.
that another story we all know about. i tried BMW's performance strut brace but BMW was right, it's not meant for the 335's air filter box, and was only a 1/2 inch or so f/ the under
the hood sheet metal. so i went w/ cross strut brace, perfect fit and i love it.(see suspension section)

i ordered the BMW perf. exhaust f/ Tisher, tkx Jason. had it in 3 days, well Tisher and i are both in MD. so i'm ready and open the huge box and admire the great craftsmanship.
my cars on the lift and ready to go. old exhaust show 1st. guess what we find, a leak in a weld just after the old X pipes. you can see the blk carbon about 8 " long.

the mounting rubber bands are off and the 2nd cats are unbolted. we laid the new exhaust on top off the old and marked our cut lines w/ tape. we found that the old pipes have i
dimple mark on both w/ the exact place to cut. (not shown) i guess it would save time knowing this and you cut it while up on the lift. BMW mechanics might do it this way.
measure 5 X's, cut once w/ the tape it place we used a cutting wheel to make each cut just after the 2nd cats.

i looked at the new system, and did not see who made this system for BMW. now we are ready to install. back go the 2nd cats and the plate that helps hold them in place.
the clamps are great, they squeeze those pipes and hold them just as well as a weld. keep the bolts of the clams in the area of the bottom of the pipe.
if you turn them in the area of 3. 9, and 12 o'clock. so they don't hit the heat shields and vibrate, or damage them. they are just thin aluminum sheet metal.
if you cut the pipes using those dimple marks you also might damage those shields. as we get to this pt i realize how perfectly this new system lines up where the old one was.
no chance for error, and having vibrations later.

so now it's on to install the last section, and yes it lines up perfect again.
in the connection between the 2 mufflers uses the 1 small clamp to hold them together. this is done just like the X pipe before this, to equalize the pressure between each.
it looked as if the X pipe eliminated is resonator w/ just flow thru exhaust. i then noticed that you can see straight thru this muffler section, w/ some baffles on the side.
but you can see straight
thru.

now to line up the tips. they are not rolled ends like the stock exhaust,
they are chromed on the inside and out. 3.25 inches i.d. with all the clamps tight one tip is just a 1/4 inch higher then the other side. they are centered perfectly.
so we loosen up the higher pipe and center clamps. pulled the pipe down slightly, & hold it there, about a 1/2 inch down. re tighten those 2 clamps and let go to review our work.
the new tips are centered and equal in hight to the cut out. that gave us one slight adjustment to get it right. what a perfect fit all around.
the new tips do stick out about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch further. not intrusive to the back of the car.

now for the golf tee mod. on the left muffler BMW has welded a tip for the vacuum line to attach it to so there is no vacuum leak. see the last pix.
BMW has it's only approved golf tee mod. no vacuum flap to attach it to.

so now it's time to start her up. the looks of this system is only outdone by the note that it makes. there was a slight drone at 2000 rpms while sitting still,
but when driving, and at 2000 rpm, no drone (sorry can't do sound). the 1st drive, (25 degrees, and i've got the windows down) sure gave the feel that the car
now had more power, but to tell the truth, i could not feel the extra HP BMW claims you get. but like i said, the sound was more pronounced, and yes, louder,
but still refined as it should be f/ a BMW.

i know this system is equal to other exhaust mods. but i went w/ BMW's exhaust so everything is still under warranty, and still... BMW.

Few comments:

- This is great that we can now clearly compare the difference between the Sedan and Coupe BMW Perf Exhausts. If you look at my thread I created with my install, you'll see I have two less clamps, and don't have that whole X pipe business. Makes sense that the sedan system is a chunk more $. Those clamps are about $65 a pop! They are VERY high quality. Very impressive.

- I am surprised you dropped the stock exhaust to cut it. Maybe it's more of a necessity with having to cut the extra part back with the X pipe? On the coupe it was much eaiser to simply cut the pipes with the stock exhaust still mounted, and the hangers and hooks unbolted to give a little play.

- I didn't notice any sort of dimples on mine. But I have a feeling you mean they were around the X pipe part, which of course I didn't have.

- I am quite positive that BMW themselves manufactures these, given that they are literally the stock muffler casings with new internals and new tips.

- Make sure you double check for any leaks from those clamps. While they are incredible clamps, I still found one tiny leak by feeling carefully with my hand and listening carefully by the clamps. This was fixed by loosening the clamp, smearing some Make-a-Gasket high temp stuff, then clamping it down again. Worked like a charm.

- Congrats and enjoy. It sounds great and looks great, doesn't it!?

Excellent job!

Any idea as to whether this will create space for the Hotchkis rear chassis brace?

Weight difference?

I have a stupid question, but there's a reason for this and I'll mention it after the answer.

When you purchased this, was there any mention of a SW update to support this? Whether Tisher, your local dealer, etc?

I know it's stupid, but you'll love the reason why.

Congrats on the purchase.
I'm sure it sounds nice but I'm curious with what BMW did with this exhaust exactly.

I ask this because the stock mufflers are straight through as can be and so is the resonator.
I'm just curous with if they are packing the mufflers with a different material or if the paths of the piping is also different.

BTW, this is what the inside of the stock muffler looks like and was taken from the following thread:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...8171&highlight

Let's see if anyone wants to cut up their Performance muffler now to compare.

Looks like the stock exhaust. I hope this exhaust didn't cost a fortune.
