Bought a used car wanted to change license plate?

Hello all...

I bought a used car but I don't like having a license plate that says random number. I wanted to get a personalized license plate... one that will express/tell more about myself... That being said... I'm sorry if its a very stupid question...
Could you please tell me what to do? Since its friday... I can't go to DMV and I hate to wait Do I just order it from the website but it doesnt let me put information about my car at all ... now im confused!

Dude, you so need to learn how to use "The Google".

http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr24.htm

And yes, you have to wait. Even if you go down there, they'll make you wait. CA does not issue plates at the DMV.

Edit: You know, I'm fairly sure you're not going to read the link I posted, so here's the relevant text:
How long does it take to get the plates?
Personalized plates will be available about 8-12 weeks after they are ordered online or the completed Special Interest License Plate Application is received by DMV. You will be notified by mail when your personalized plates are ready for pick up. Sequential license plates will be mailed directly to you at the address on your DMV vehicle record; you should receive them in approximately 4-6 weeks.

You have to wait to go, and then you also have to wait to get your plates. So if you order Monday, you should probably get them around the beginning of June.

Plus, you have to wait because a panel of "judges" needs to decide if your choice is "socially acceptable." I'm not kidding. Some states are actually doing this. There are lots of banned phrases, combinations, etc.

Depending on your state, you'll usually have to pay the extra fee every year. I have to pay $30 extra, EVERY year, just for my personalized plates.

In Colorado, you usually have to wait 4-6 weeks while your personal plate is being printed. And yes, they print it, not stamp it for personalized plates here. We did some IT work for the Dept of Rev and worked on the Title and Registration System. There's a known list of inappropriate letter/number combinations that will automatically disqualify the plate request.

If you think $30 is expensive, do not move to California.

Our renewals range from $30 - $70. Not cheap, but not outrageous. Looking good costs money.

Disclosure: I have a regular plate because I'm fugly and cheap.

Pick one - they're both equally true.

The renewal for my M5 is in my office, but I thought the Golden State was charging me $75 just to keep its personalized plate...and likewise on the 335i. That's in addition to the other fees. Mine may be higher because they're both personalized and special interest.

Random number plates are not only less expensive but they keep you anonymous. That anonymity can come in handy if you live in a huge metro region (like SoCal) where all kinds of road rage lunatics and other species of nut cases roam the freeways and surface streets.

p.s., for those in CA, if for some reason you don't like the random sequence plates you got dealt by the DMV (e.g., they have the initials of your last girlfriend you now hate, or some other combo that you just can't live with) then simply stop in any DMV office and tell them one of the plates got 'accidently' destroyed. For $19 they will hand you a new random numbered set on the spot; no waiting. This also helps if you bought a used car (plates stay with the car in CA) and the old owner had a lot of enemies....
