How strict are they in the Houston area for no front plates? I am picking up a coupe soon and am thinking about not installing the plates.

Yep. My roommate has never even had the plate mentioned when he's been pulled over in his Z.

My friend got pulled over a few years ago specifically b/c of no plate on his Z28.

I'm playing it safe right now and running the front plate. I'm thinking about have the front holes filled and running the plate a custom way. Either the style that's been posted here, or figure out another way.

I doubt you will get pulled over for specifically not having a front plate in Houston, but you might get a ticket if you get pulled over for something else.

FYI I have heard of friends getting tickets for "obstructed license plate" when ANY wording on the plate (including, if you can believe this, "The Lone Star State" or "Texas") is covered by the plate frame. BMW does make a stainless steel frame that does Not cover either of these..

They've already reversed that law. It no longer applies. I saw it on the news a few weeks ago.

i had an STI for awhile with no front plate and i got pulled over several times when i was driving cross country, i never got a ticket. They were just looking for a reason to pull me over, i guess they thought i was some punk kid in a modded car, cops got a hard on ever time they saw that rear spoiler.

I have never been bothered in the city, just the highways in the country. i am not currently running a front plate.

when i used to get pulled over i had my plate in the car and would tell the cop that i had just gotten back from a track event and that the plate blocked the radiator and i was over heating, so i removed it. seemed to work, and now i have a FMIC so makes sense for that too.

I have never experienced any trouble in actual Dallas city limits... (Dallas cops more important shit to worry about then a stupid front plate missing) but ya if you are in suburbs like Plano, Richardson, Frisco, Allen.... Its a stupid reason for them to pull ya over.. I never ran one and been pulled over 2wice for speeding and none of them said a thing about it.....

Grumpy, what does the statute read for front license plates in Texas? I want to translate it?

never mind I found it.If you dont have a front plate your screwed no matter. however if you have it displayed in your window, your going to have to prove that its clearly seen and that the front window is considered the FRONT of the vehicle. I would think not.
§ 502.404. OPERATION OF VEHICLE WITHOUT LICENSE PLATE OR

REGISTRATION INSIGNIA. (a) A person commits an offense if the

person operates on a public highway during a registration period a

passenger car or commercial motor vehicle that does not display two

license plates, at the front and rear of the vehicle, that have

been:

(1) assigned by the department for the period; or

(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the

department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the

period.

(b) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a

public highway during a registration period a passenger car or

commercial motor vehicle, other than a vehicle assigned license

plates for the registration period, that does not properly display

the registration insignia issued by the department that establishes

that the license plates have been validated for the period.

(c) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a

public highway during a registration period a road tractor,

motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer that does not display a license

plate, attached to the rear of the vehicle, that has been:

(1) assigned by the department for the period; or

(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the

department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the

period.

(d) Subsections (a) and (b) do not apply to a dealer

operating a vehicle as provided by law.

(e) An offense under this section is a misdemeanor

punishable by a fine not to exceed $200.
