V3 and limp modes?

After talking to some V3 owners and hearing rave reviews about the increased responsiveness, I am considering upgrading my V2 to V3.

However, having had a Procede since V1.42, I am very leery of limp modes. My current setup, a variant of V2, is 100% rock solid. No limps on the street and more importantly, no limps in 15 track days. Before this solid setup, I had limp modes on track more often than not.

Those of you who have experienced limp on track days know how frustrating it is given you only have 4 sessions a day. Losing a session or two to limps makes you want to go back to stock.

So how limp prone is V3? I will gladly pay for it if it results in the same rock solid reliability that I currently have with my V2 variant. If you've tried V3 on the road course, all the better.

I just don't want to paying for the V3 harness and end up not being able to use it because it makes me limp. No pun intended.

Please chime in with your experiences..

Well I never ever had a limp mode on the street. But plenty on track.

Do you track your car? Road course, not 1/4 mile.

no...I havent tracked it yet so I have no experience with that. The current procede is pretty rock solid so you should be okay as long as the oil temp doesnt get too high. I have had long stints of driving very hard including top speed runs and it was okay.

Im sure Shiv would be happy to send you a harness to evaluate with a money back guarantee. If V2 is rock solid then techically there shouldnt be a reason to be concerned with the upgrades made for V3.

If it performs as it should he keeps your money and you keep the harness. If for some reason it doesn't perform as intended, you send it back and he returns your money.

Sound fair Shiv?

Apparently, it doesn't help much when other people say their tune had been rock solid. I am one of the few V2 users who have experienced limps while on track and cruising and I never figured out the reason. It might be related to my car, hence, I can not be sure whether limps will occur with Rev. 2 as well.

It might also be of interest that I scanned my car with the BT tool and found NOTHING that smells like a cause for limps. I also had low load issues (rough idle, sputter) but can't find even one fault code.

I found three fault codes that - I guess - are related to installation problems (a broken green cable). DME was complaining it couldn't read torque.

Nope, that didn't make sense to me as I only got limps occasionally. I also don't have a boost gauge. I am very surprised that none of the limps left a fault code behind...

If you are getting low load issues like rough idle and limps during cruise, it's sounding more and more like a HPFP. Especially if it's lot leaving any codes.

hey shiv, i have a V3 with the maps from bimmerfest still in there. I've already had my hpfp replaced but like a year ago so its still the shitty version they gave me and its going out again, but this time around Im throwing some codes and then followed by limp mode. The first one hit when I was in high elevation for a day trip in Big Bear (if thats at all relevant) and then the car would start up with limp mode on ~50% of the time after that. i removed removed the v3 and I havnt thrown limp since, but Im going in for servicing and was wondering if I should get my car scanned as a just in case? i know this is a very opened ended question with many different variables but bare with me lol

Shiv, I got a total of 3 limps during cruise, 10-15 limps happened WOT. The low load issues almost disappeared. Warmer weather? Could also be the injectors, and the spark plugs are 22k old. I will upgrade to V3 right after maintenance.

Can you confirm: broken green cable <-> dme/torque fault code?

Thanks!

Definitely get your car scanned during service. No harm in that. Also, the map you are running is ancient in relative terms. Older maps had fuel pressure targets that were higher than they needed to be which made it harder for the fuel pressure target to be reached (hence, limp). We were just excessively conservative with respect to he tuner code back then. Update to v.3.1 maps (or run the v3.2 beta) which addresses this. If you car still limps and throws fuel pressure related codes, then its time for a good fuel pump

22k miles on your plugs?? They should be replaced every 15k miles if you are running a tune. Just explain your issues to the dealership and let them figure it out. If you are getting limps during cruise, there is a mechanical/component failure that they will need to address. Should be pretty easy for them to do. But they will follow a standard protocol which may necessitate 2-3 dealer visits. Each visit replacing something new (first plugs, then coil, then injector, etc,.)

The green wire you are referring to transmits the MAP signal from the PROcede to the DME. So yes, if that is compromised, you will get all sorts of codes and driveability problems. And since that is what the DME needs for load calculations, I can see that interfering with the a torque fault code. Since you have a pin-out installation, you are a bit more exposed to loose/flakey connections than someone with a PnP harness.

I've been running V3 rev I for 8 months now with no limps and not a single code reported by the BT scanner.

Yeah, I'm still concerned. Are there ANY guys out there who have run it on a track without problems?

When I first got V2, it was at least one limp a day on track. With my tweaked V2, I've been rock solid.

I am nervous about spending money on V3 and then having to downgrade to my rock solid V2...and having wasted the V3 money.

Anyone? Bueller?
