Thumbs up How to EASILY adjust the rear KW coilovers

So my KW Variant 2 suspension has finally settled and wanted to adjust them in the rear. I first though of welding something to the black piece that everyone complains about slipping, but then didn't want to fiddle with disconnecting the battery and possibly damaging the suspension metal.

Looking in the toolbox I found a 3" C-clamp. I clamped it down with only a little pressure on the black collar and it worked like magic . It didn't spin at all. I was able to adjust both sides very easily. A clamp is all you need to hold it in place. The 3" was a perfect size were it would connect with the walls around the suspension and prevent any spinning.

Well I hope this helps everyone that has been angry about the poor design in this great suspension. Here are a few Iphone pics just to give you an idea where I placed the clamp. Good luck!

Wow thanks for this! I was searching the forums today JUST for something like this because I need to adjust my rears.

God that design is so annoying... the last time I had to wedge a crowbar up there and turn the key at the same time... it was hell.

Are you guys adjusting the height? Do you just turn the clamp?

wow nice, good idea. What i was doing was using a mallet to hit the adjustment wrench repeadely to mimic an impact wrench. It worked along with using a jack to compress the suspension a bit to make the springs push harder on the top collar.

No the clamp is to lock the top in place while you turn the collar below.

Not the best pic. It's leaning on a hill, but you get the idea.

i adjusted the rear again yesterday. i was using a C-clamp just as the OP recommended(2nd time doing this since i read his post)...but found that there are times when you can adjust the perch without the top black piece moving...even without the clamp attached. doesn't mean you did anything wrong...just means that the perch is able to spin freely.

How do you adjust the rebound at the very top? Do all of you have holes in the trunk for that? I put holes in mine for the performance suspension install so the trunk liner would not have to be fully removed.

I have plastic caps that now cover the holes.

^^^ Schweeeet! I may do this, but I may create an even smaller hole, and then use one of those "BMW" tennis balls as a plug, or do you have a better idea? I've been adjusting rear rebound by letting the rear seat down (not removing the liner), but it's still a PITA.

Also, when I first installed these (when everything was clean), I found just stickin' a realllllly flat head screwdriver between chasis and the spring mount will cause it to have ~more~ friction than the spring collar, so I ~could~ turn the spring collar. Now that everything's nice and dirty, I just clean the threads and collar well, and the dirt between the spring mount and chasis provides the friction needed to prevent it from spinning.

There are lots of places that sell plastic plugs or caps that would fit almost any hole: http://www.stockcap.com/materials/prodPlastic.asp

I cut the holes in the carpet with three sides of a sqaure so one side is still connected. Then you can pull the flap back and get to the head of the strut. Afterwards push it back and it just about completely hides the hole. Kind of like having a door in the carpet...if that makes any sense.

Thanks for sharing.. I tried it and it worked on the rear left only. On the rear right, the black thing (it's clamped) still spinned with the perch. Any tip? should I put some wd40?

Thanks
