DIY - BMW Performance Air Intake System (European)

Well, i just got my performance intake system and only found that mine version is for the european market. Well, after some search and couldnt find one from the board except the US version which is very different.
So, i think with this little DIY would help those european version (like mine) to install it with confidence. Enjoy!

A quick look at the the 2 different filter, OEM is yellow.

Tools you will need:
-A screw driver
-Torx 15, 20, 25

1. Remove the screws circled in red
2. Remove the intake channel and intake box cover.
3. Remove the old filter by pressing both the plastic tension pieces inwards to free from the catch and lift upwards.
4. Remove the 2 brackets in the upper right hand corner. Pull up the top bracket
5. Followed by the lower bracket which you need to unscrew it. This is a plastic screw, so be gentle and use the correct size of screw driver.
6. Install new filter. make sure the centre hole sits correctly towards the intake tunnel while pushing the filter forward to secure in place.
7. Install the new brackets. Its a tight fit so you need to make sure this big bracket sits there lining up the holes of the screw. Then, use the plastic screw which you removed in step 5 to secure it.
8. Install the new CF air channel. You can put back the 2 front screws to half secure it so you can adjust the intake box cover later to fit.
9. Slid in the new intake box top cover. Here, you have to press the top cover gently to fit in the lower box in the correct manner or you wont be able to locate the screw hole correctly. Once the screw holes aligned, screw them tight.
10. After making sure that there's no gap between the CF channel and the top cover, you can now tighten all the screws as in step 1.
11. Stand back and admire your new Performance CF Intake.

nice diy, how much does the euro version cost and you had any chance to drive the car and notice any improvement in performance?

so your saying that you don't really need to remove the air box at all... you just unscrew the tops and put on the new top... and the new ducts

I hope it's way less than what we're paying here in North America. Looking at OP's pics and pics from Allan's installation of the NA-spec'd performance intake, it looks like there's not much difference between the regular OEM EU-spec'd intake and the performance intake. The shape of the airbox is the same and the filter is pretty much the same. With the NA-spec'd performance intake, it relaces the stock airbox and changes the filter.

for the Euro version yes. But for us in NA, the airbox is replaced with the performance one (which resembles the OEM EU stock airbox).

Thanks, it cost around USD1100.
Drove the car a little, throttle felt more responsive. Will update more once i go on the open road!

seems like the Euro version is less restrictive in that with the euro version, more air can get in with the cone filter while with the NA ones, less air gets in due to the flat filter that we have (even with the performance version, the filter is still flat)

It cost a little close to USD1100

But i think i paid mainly for the CF piece and the words (BMW Performance) on it

That filter element looks a lot like the K&N drop in filter for the euro cars. I just ordered my filter and should have it in another few days, so I guess I can scratch off BMW performance intake off the list.

K&N part no E-2022, ordered from AutoAnything in Cali.

Nice writeup, thanks. So apart from the filter, the duct to the windscreen, and some CF, its not much different to the normal euro intake. Good to know! I'm thinking of just trying the filter now if I apparently have 2/3 of the BMW performance intake already.

I'm also curious to know what the difference in sound and performance is like given that it's not such a radical change on euro cars as it is on US cars?

Hi guys can anyone advice by doing this mod, will we void our warranty if the installation is by done by our own and also do we need to do some re-programming on for the ECU?

not sure where you can order euro spec performance intake in US.. not even the sponsors in this forum could get it.. plus you would have to order the housing too since it require part of standard euro intake housing
