No Recommendation for Kerscher Exhaust

The installation is heck of the job. I could not believe that we paid so much money for the system which didn't even fit right. The only thing fits in this installation is the muffler side. The cat back design sucks. The extended right pipe design sucks. Lots of modifications were made to fit these pipes. I can just say one thing about the guy at World Muffler: da bomb. He did an excellent job to modify the hooks, hangers and fit the pipes very well. Welding job was even better than the stock pipe.

Picture 1: first modification on the cat back

Picture 2: right extended pipe modification

Picture 3: Kerscher design problem: the Charcoal filter tube stay right on the pipe

Picture 4: Kerscher design problem: the pipe hook located right below the Charcoal filter and could not be hooked with the supplied braket

Picture 5: Kerscher pipe was cut off and replaced with custom fit pipe.

Picture 6: the job is done very well by World Muffler in Sunnyvale, CA.

Picture 7: my car at home

By the way, the Kerscher exhaust shipped to me with big dents (pictures below) on the cat back and the muffler. I didn't realized these until I unwrapped them at the shop. It could happen either during the shipping from Germany to DTM or from Ryan (DTM) to me.

Hahha..... you finally had a taste of what I had when I installed mine, it sucks and very frustrated. But certainly the muffler shop you went to did a great job on repositioning the cat back pipes; very clean job.

I really think Kerscher should send us a new one with the correct piping for US version. Its not a bad design; its just that they are not for US version specifically. They should compensate us with a new and correct one, especially after we have to spend extra amount of $$ to get it installed.

As for the packaging, mine original packaging is all mess up. They had to use a new box to double box it simply b/c they took out all the items in the original box and couldn't pack them back.

Oh well, I am still happy with it.

Lastly, check your PM. got some questions for you.

This thread was unfortunately moved from the main forum to this tech forum, and now we'll get no views/replies on this...

Kidding aside, I love how your car looks with those quad exhaust. Can't wait to see it in person Sorry to hear about all the installation problems tho.

And also, after I saw how Eisenmann do the pipping for the quads, as in how they do the pipping from the muffler to the passenger side outlet, they are off my list.

Agreed. I don't like the way of Eisenmann pipe behind the storage compartment. Also, with Eisenmann, we have to cut open the right stock bumper and I don't like that. If I want to put the stock exhaust back to sell the car, Kerscher will work but Eisenmann.
BTW, If Kerscher sent us the right kit for US version, the installation shouldn't be that hard and should cost ~$100 only.
Even though the installation is a pain in the ass, the exhaust looks da bomb after finish. Luckily, I came to the right shop for installation, and the guys did absolutely excellent job on modifications. I was quoted $120, but paid him a little more because the job was too much. Based on the amount of works, he should be paid at least $300.

I remember you saying you were going to get this and it looks great! The Euro Supersprint "dual" exhaust is available, but the US version is several months away. It is my understanding that the American E90s have the catalytic converters built into the exhaust manifold to heat up the engine quicker (i.e., reduce emissions on start-up). The non-American ones have the catalytic converters located downstream, hence the difference between American and European exhausts.

Are you or Elaine worried about passing California emissions inspection? I know it will likely pass the sniffer test, but won't the certifying tech guy notice this is aftermarket?

I thought the Valve Control in the right rear pipe tip help to heat up the engine faster, but I was wrong. It's only for reducing the deep sound at low RPM. The cat back was actually the one. Well, when it comes to 2011, if needed, I may put the oem cat back on, but still use the Kerscher muffler. I was about to do this at the shop, but the guy recommend to put the Kerscher cat back on also since it looked complete with the exhaust. BTW, I may sell it by 2011 already.

since there are so many test only stations now, it's really now just knowing which stations to go to.

I start to enjoy the exhaust. Starting the car, driving at low speed and feeling the deep sound under the seats made me so excited. I don't know about yours, LWL, but mine, I felt the car's even stronger than before.

Jimmy, the Euro Cats are usually located further back than they are in the US models. Since the Kerscher is a Euro item, doesn't the exhaust system actually come with two cats in-line with the pipe?

If so, you may have twice the complement of necessary cats.

Michael, I'm not sure about that. According to the Kerscher description, they described this complete system as "behind catalytic converter". So I assume that the Euro catalytic converter is located in the front pipes. Unless you're talking about other cat.

Okay Jimmy, I had to find out for myself.

I made this seemingly hard to read thread, but if you look closely at the diagrams, you can see that both US and Euro exhaust manifolds have different catalysts. The US pipe that starts just beyond the exhaust manifold contains two extra cats. The Euro pipe has none.

Yes, Michael. I realized that when LWL installed her exhaust. Because of these 2 cat, US pipes are further apart the the Euro straight pipe.

Is there any word that Kerscher possibly will release a U.S. version of their exhaust system?
