What are BMW playing at?!!

If you go into the Configurator on the BMW website there are new coupe models. As well as the "get a free M-Sport upgrade" offer there is also a "Highline" model for both SE and m-sport.

Looking at my model in particular, the "Highline SE" is 105 less than an ordinary SE but includes leather trim and Type 189 wheels as standard - as well as Bluetooth - though for some reason, you don't get a shark fin aerial.

For some reason the engine is 174bhp and not 177bhp but the cars otherwise seem identical. They've still removed the servotronic and partial electric seats and it would appear - on the surface anyway, that you would be an idiot not to get the Highline version as it has 2,500 extra kit for nothing.

I haven't looked in detail at the other models but they all seem to be about 3 bhp down on the standard versions but otherwise I can't see any difference.

Thanks BMW! I know our second hand values are down the toilet anyway, but this just flushed them away completely

What you cannot do is specify a couple of the extras it would seem. You can only have the specced wheels and the Business Navigation, the Prof is not selectable which also denies the TV function. Personally if I am going to look at the built in nav and associated assist and connected stuff then the Prof has to be the option. But as you say there is a bunch of goodies that make the overall price look much better than speccing a bespoke car. Phone call to see what is going on me thinks as I wait for mine to be built!

Can't quite see why you would drop the outputs by a few bhp - it doesn't change the vehicle tax bracket.

Just a thought is this in some way particularly attractive to fleet operators/company cars? Not in that territory so don't know the ins and outs.

BMW are just doing the same thing that Mercedes and Audi have been doing for the last few months on the C class, CLC and A5. ie free sport upgrades and free auto transmission etc.

You can change the wheels. I could specify the 230s instead of the 189s and it was an extra 455 only (normally 1,315).

You are right that you can't get Sat Nav Pro but that is all that appears to be missing.

The m-sport version gets the 19" 225m wheels as standard.

But are Merc and Audi changing the engine spec and restricting the other options?

Follow my logic. If I don't want the Nav Pro I can get 19" wheels and leather on the 330i Sport for free but lose 4 bhp; if I do it is 1925 but as it isn't a Highline option I also have to pay 1985 for the leather and 225s on a "standard" model. That means that the current cost of the Nav Pro is in effect 3910! Leave out the 225s and just go for the leather (almost standard imho) then it's just shy of 3k for the Pro system (and you don't seem to see many with the Business system in the AUCs). Sure this doesn't take into account any discount you can work but I just don't see the point in such a restriction. I also don't feel like I am getting a reasonable deal on a well specced car either

Also noticed no mention of the Highline anywhere else on the website and the Tech Spec is unavailable.

3 series 4 door went throught this process just before the face lift last yr. The coupe facelift 'normally' falls 1 yr later i.e Sept this yr. so they are trying to create interest before this situation? And clearing stock of wheels, etc. before new designs.

Also probably helps residuals as stops dealers offering 6k of a new 335i Coupe which I have seen recently.

it's just a plan by BMW to confuse people so much they'll accidentally buy a lower specced car for more money....

We're in a minority who actually bother about options, most people I know buy cars without even knowing there are any options....

A friend of my wife's bought a car, she didn't even know what it was - 'it's a red one' she said.

No bull. It was actually a mazda 2.

Getting back on topic, if I spec my 320d to the same level as a 335i Highline, the 335i is only 895 dearer! WTF!

And if on top of this, I specced 230 alloys on both of them, they are the SAME price.

Are you sure that the diffeence between the 177 and 174 is not down to units as 177PS is about 174BHP??

There's a list of cars on the configurator. Why list some in bhp and the others in PS? They also name the engine type - N57, N54 on only the Highline cars.

Sounds like there is a parts bin clear out.

They may have bought too many busniess nav units and now need to get shot of them. Is the current business nav/prof Nav HD type or not?
