Leaking Differential - Anyone had this before?

I put the car on my lift and was checking to see the part number on my differential and saw that it had been leaking pretty recently. Anyone here had this issue before? How common is this?

Damn...take that to the dealer so they can swap your diff out. I was looking at mine yesterday to find the fill plug and it is dry as a bone.

It looks like it is coming from the top, there should be a vent in the top, maybe the vent has failed or it was overfilled at the factory - time for the dealer either way!

Boo. I don't want to waste my time at the dealer for just an overfilled diff. Does anyone know the diff fill level? I might just open it myself and check it now.

I am not sure there is a vent. Our cars have sealed diffs and transmissions thats why you can go on forever without ever needing to refill them. That is most definitely a failed gasket or a housing failure resulting in some fracture of some sort (so called porous housing). Yeah you need to take it in its all covered by warranty.

There is a vent otherwise it could potentially explode under pressure .

We have a winner.

CA claims to have said that the factory had overfilled the differential casing with too much oil. The excess oil started spouting out the relief hole on the top of it. Guess I had given a nice heating with the abuse I give it and it expanded/boiled out? haha who knows.

At least it is good to know that I didn't cause premature wear on the gears by running low on oil.
