what causes a misfire?

Dealer told me I'm getting engine malfunction lights due to misfires. They updated me to the newest software on friday...32.2? Well anyways yesterday and today I got the same light on start up i'm curious as to what causes misfires?

Btw I uninstalled my jb3 on Thursday and was still getting the engine malfunction light after.

Anything that could cause a cylinder not to fire properly is what causes a misfire. Could be spark plug, coil, fuel pump, injector, dme, wiring, kinked fuel line, etc.

ooooh i ask because i keep getting misfires (according to my dealer) so they placed the blame on my old ecu software. they updated it on friday to 32.2 but the car still throws the error and the car still shakes.

it's likely bad spark plugs. I just replaced mine after some bad misfiring

I'd have to check again, but I believe there is a bulletin that we have to go through for N54 misfire diagnosis, and programming is (I believe) the first step.

I just changed out my spark plugs and fuel injectors cause the dealer said my car's 4th cylinder is misfiring. And that fixed everything.

A common problem is the ignition coils cannot hold a spark on cars with tunes...If the higher amount of boost blows out the spark then you will reach pre-ignition conditions in your cylinder causing a misfire.
