My light came on at 9k. The pads are fine there is something faulty with the sensors or ecu and can't seem to reset with BT. Apparently this is fairly common. I might take it in next week.

There's a bulletin about erroneous brake pad replacement warnings. The software has an error, and needs to be updated.

You'll have to go back afterward, complain about the lag, and ask for the lag fix (or try mentioning ahead of time).

+1. Got the brake pad warning symbol a couple weeks ago. DME needed to be updated. Pads were fine.

Probably. I did. Tell them when they update the dme to perform the wastegate valve conversion. I have to go back for this as I didn't know about it at the time of the s/f update.

The DME is the car's computer. Yes, I have lag at low rpm's now. Will try the wastegate valve conversion soon. Check out the last few pages of the 29.2/lag thread in the turbo section. Doubt you have much choice unless you can live with the warning symbol on your dash.

Based on paperwork I got from my dealer last week, E89X-09-03-510 equals 33.0.0.6.

Background on my reflash:
I have an 11-2006 build E90 that was on original software (and HPFP!). I bought it in November 2008. I recently got a brake pad service indicator and took the car in. The SA said it needed a reprogram, and did not actually have worn pads. It was reporting 255% brake pad life (summarized in SIB 34 02 08).

I had already printed instructions for the tech based on the helpful info I got in this thread, and instructed them to do the "wastegate retrofit". It is called "conversion wastegate valve" in ISTA-speak. The SA was not very familiar with the process, but he was very helpful and found a tech who knew what to do. Note: The SA said they had to select this option before programming, not after.

The data sheet they gave me shows that my cars old software was E89X-06-09-540 (23.2.2?) and the new software is E89X-09-03-510. Elsewhere in the paperwork, the new software is listed as 33.0.0.6.

I took the car in last Friday morning, drove a 528xi for a few hours, and then got my car back that afternoon.

Driving impressions:

It feels about the same. I don't baby the car, and I've given it a bit of a workout since. The ~1 second long start up rattle is gone, but I don't detect any lag. The low end torque is still good. Note that I do have an AT, so it might mask some effects. Take off in D seems to be a bit smoother when the car is cold.

Strange software upgrade effects I noticed:
-I think the font lettering for "D" and "DS" got slightly smaller
-Service Info menu is only available when stopped with foot on brake
-SOS service interval is shown where is wasn't before
-My radio station presets got erased, and my tone controls, but EQ settings and seat and mirror positions were retained.

Summary: The new SW is OK as long as you have them do the "conversion wastegate valve". After reading about all the trouble that a few people have had, I was worried about getting new software. Luckily, mine went smoothly, and I still like my car!

That sounds like what I have to do?

Thanks Bruff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VERY Good info!!!

BMW Tech:

If this car needs an ECU reflash for any reason, please use ISTA/P (not Progman) to load 2.32.1 or newer software, and select the “wastegate retrofit” option or “lag fix” option after the software update.

Please refer to SI B11 13 07 for more information:
All 335i/xi and 535i/xi models built from June 2006 up to September 2007
The updated software causes a small amount of increased "turbocharger lag" under certain circumstances and, while not substantial, the lag may be perceptible to the most sensitive BMW drivers. X6, 135i, 3 Series and 5 Series vehicles from March 2008 production onward are not affected. If said "turbocharger lag" is a customer's complaint, then the vehicle's DME software can be retrofitted to the original waste gate operation.
Procedure for vehicles up to September 2007 production:
Using ISTA/P 2.32.1 or a more recent version, select "Conversions", and then select "Wastegate valve conversion". Follow the on-screen prompts to reinstall the original waste gate operation.
After the "Waste gate valve conversion" has been completed, some waste gate-related noise may be detected.
This car has never been flashed, and I want to avoid the turbo lag that can come from the newer software.
Im just going to print this out and give it to them, hope it help! Thanks to Bruff I got all this information. Glad He had it!!!!
