Gimmie a friggin break..

I agree that breastfeeding in public can be uncomfortable for some people, but if the mother places a blanket over the child, then there shouldnt be a problem. But to go to the extent of not even being able to see a picture of a child breastfeeding is ridiculous. Its natural, its a baby. The US is so weird about nudity, sex..etc. I can remember being in Europe and South America going to the beaches and seeing girls who def werent in the best shape wearing itsy bitsy bikinis, and they were proud of their bodies. Here, everyone is so touchy. Anyway, thats my opinion. I will admit that even im shy/self conscience about my body, where as my cousins who are from italy could careless. Do you think this is a cultural/regional/personal issue? Hmm..

Here is the cover of the magazine that a majority of people are disgusted with.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Readers of a US parenting magazine are crying foul over the publication's latest cover depicting a woman breastfeeding, with some calling the photo offensive and disgusting.

"I was SHOCKED to see a giant breast on the cover of your magazine," one woman from Kansas wrote in reaction to the picture in Babytalk, a free magazine that caters to young mothers. "I was offended and it made my husband very uncomfortable when I left the magazine on the coffee table."

Her reaction was part of some 5,000 letters the magazine has received in response to a poll to gage reader sentiment about Babytalk's August cover photo, which shows a baby nursing.

Several readers said they were "embarrassed" or "offended" by the Babytalk photo and one woman from Nevada said she "immediately turned the magazine face down" when she saw the photo.

"Gross, I am sick of seeing a baby attached to a boob," the mother of a four-month-old said.

Another reader said she was "horrified" when she received the magazine and hoped that her husband hadn't laid eyes on it.

"I had to rip off the cover since I didn't want it laying around the house," she said.

A national television program also ran a segment on the controversy, interviewing several people in New York who expressed disgust over the cover photo.

The picture in Babytalk was aimed at illustrating the controversy surrounding breastfeeding in the United States, where a national survey by the American Dietetic Association found that 57 percent of those polled are opposed to women breastfeeding in public and 72 percent think it is inappropriate to show a woman breastfeeding on television programs.

Babytalk executive editor Lisa Moran said though most of those who responded to the poll about the cover photo gave the magazine a thumbs up, she was surprised that some 25 percent expressed outrage.

"There is a real puritanical streak in America," Moran told AFP. "You see celebrities practically baring their breasts all the time and no one seems to mind in this sort of sexual context.

"But in this very natural context of feeding your child, a lot of Americans are very uncomfortable with it."

She said the controversy is all the more surprising in light of concerted efforts by the US government and health professionals to encourage women to breastfeed.

"Everyone is saying that breastfeeding is best for baby but there is so little support for it in public," Moran said.

She said the Babytalk cover photo marks the first time a major parenting magazine in the United States dares to break the taboo about showing a woman's breast and the outrage it has prompted is not about to discourage editors from doing it again.

"This hasn't scared us off at all," Moran said. "We're thrilled and hopefully this will help women get more support for nursing."

Agreed Bella. It is completely natural and the magazine is a baby magazine to top it off. There is really nothing gross about it unless some of those people see it as a sexual thing, maybe THEY need to get their mind out of the gutter.

Its a baby magazine. What would u expect to see, a man? Women holding babies are so common in maternity magazines and adds. You wouldnt ever see a man with a baby because its not as common. the guy was probably a perv having a maternity magazine so he could see the little babies. People these days.

hey, i just walked to lunch downtown and there was this old guy yelling top of his lungs "IF YOU'RE NOT A CHRISTIAN, YOU'RE A SATANIST, YOU ALL ARE SATANISTS IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN CHRIST" while holding a huge poster of a bloody fetus torn to pieces with big lettering "STOP ABORTIONS"

my point is, i hate fucking fanatics. and recently (bush vs. stem cell research, ban of howard stern, CBS vs. people in Janet Jackson tit case, Happy Holidays vs. Merry Christmas, etc, etc.) the secular nature of this government has been greatly splintered by these religious fanatics while they, themselves, are physically and actually attacking another group of religious fanatics in the middle east, namely, muslims. how ridiculous!

The worst part of "public debates" like this is that they're usually just well orchestrated publicity stunts... is this some start up magazine or something? I've never heard of them. There are 191 articles on google news about this. Nicely done.

i'm pointing out how extreme people are getting in this country over shit that is completely insignificant and, in this case, totally natural.

wtf? just the idea of any kind of human contact in public is becoming so "ungodly" "gross" and "indecent" to many that i'm starting to feel like i can't walk two blocks while holding my girlfriend's hand without getting some kind of attitude from a "church lady."

I've seen that picture before (not sure if the same mag) but didn't even give it any thought. It is actually a very cute picture, especially the way the baby seems to be bonding with mom through eye contact. I'm a pediatritian so I am in contact with breast feeding moms all the time. It's a natural thing. Some people are just ridiculous.

I was hesitant to start this thread cause i wasnt sure how most of you felt towards this topic. But, its not so much the breastfeeding, its the general concept of body, sex, nudity, ..etc. I guess if people were more open with themselves and others, young girls wouldnt have as much body issues as they do.

For example, my sis in law is from brazil. Born and rasied. When her and my brother first started dating, she would always be over at my house..etc. Anyway, she would always come into my room naked, topless or just in her panties and talk to me or ask if she could borrow a shirt..etc. But when i would ask to borrow one of her outfits, id take it into my room, shut the door and change. She would always ask me why i was so shy about my body, we're both women, and theres nothing to be afraid of. Now im totally comfortable being naked infront of her but it took time.

I noticed this w/ my other friends also. Before we all go out to the club we get ready together, but they always turn their backs or go into the bathroom to change. And im talking about my good friends.. maybe its a comfort issue.

I don't find the pic offensive at all. It doesn't show the nipple and the pic is mostly of the baby. A picture is worth a thousand words and this is the same. Have seen worse! Maybe imagine the photographer trying to capture an image of a baby connecting and forming a bond with the mother. Or don't think perverted and see it as a baby feeding from the mother. If you don't have kids you won't or might not know what I'm talking about.

Here in Oregon. Land of the hippies. Women breast feed in the open on just about every corner, in the mall, at the bus stop... You name it. Babies Got Milk.

Oregon's a sweet place to live!

I love Hippies...

Times and society has changed so much in the last decade its not even funny. Girls do not look the same as when I grew up or the times before me. Teenagers look like they are 21 now. The clothes are different as well as everything else. Even my 4 year old wants a cell phone. Different cultures always view things differently and we think they are weird but they are natural to the environment they grew up in. The sex and nudity is not so uncommon in other countries but here in American we have different view based on what society has labeled.

Bella - I agree - very bizzare - personally I though the cover was quite 'cute', but then my wife breastfed my 2 boys and frankly it all seemed quite normal to me.

Funniest part was the wife who had to rip off the cover in case her husband saw it - hasn't he seen her breasts ? I guess they have twin beds and keep the lights off - just in case.

BTW you sister in law sounds hot.
