Any thought on the lifespan of the 335s Twin Turbo Engine? - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

I hope to own my car for a very long time.
Yet I recall reading somewhere that turbo engines don't tend to last for as many miles as non-turbos.

Thoughts and opinions on the 335i's potential lifespan vs. that of the non-turbo 328i are most welcome...

My guess is forever. I can't see this engine under normal usage dying in just a couple of years. It's like anything else... take care of the car and it'll take care of you.

Edit: I owned a chipped 1.8T A4 and I drove it hard. I never had a problem with the engine. It never burned oil, never. I put 60k miles on it before I lost it.

Is it possible to install a turbo timer on this? Is this turbo even oil cooled?

If you let the turbos cool for at least 90 seconds before shutting off engine, this means letting the car idle, the turbos will last about 150,000 miles. the engine itself will last like any other, but you must be nice to the turbos and let them cool before just stopping them.

The 335 turbo engine has run the dyno for 250,000 miles nonstop.
But there was no ,, on off on off for the turbo.
I will let mine cool when shutting down.
You would think with all this technology that BMW would let the car run for 90 sec after key is remove to shut down turbos correctly.

In most cases the turbos have come down to a safe temperature by the time a person parks. For example they go driving thru a garage, parking lot, around a few neighborhoods etc. If you just happen to pull over immediately after running the car hard than that would be a good idea but in most cases that doesn't happen.

Agreed. This was evident in the A4, by the glow of the turbo. At night and after a hard run, you open the hood and low and behold the turbo is glowing RED. After normal driving however it didn't do this. I don't know if the 335i's turbos glow or even if you'll beable to see them. We'll find out soon.

The vast majority of cars on the road in this part of the world are turbo diesels and, while there were a few reported cases of turbos failing a decade or so ago, I know of many TDs that go beyond 200,000km with no problem. In fact, I personally don't know of anybody that's had turbo problems.

turbos last a long time with proper care. Which means that if you drive it hard, make sure u give it 1-2 minutes idle of cooling when parking. Otherwise, synthetic oil is good enough for normal driving and helps prolong the life of the turbos

Longer than the the CPO warranty.

Turbo engines get a bad rep, because they tend to be easy to mod to mucho hp and people overstress the engine. I remember talking to the Subaru service rep about the WRX engine. In the main, he had seen nothing to indicate shorter life span. What pissed him off, were 'the kids' that kept modding the cars, then bringing them back with melted pistons that they wanted replacing under warranty.

The engine should be fine. At least for 6 years / 100k miles. Time will tell.

The tubine blades configuration used in the N54 engine will have the following advantages over the turbines that are currently being used by some of the auto makers.
1. They are heat resistant within the operational window defined:1,050 °C or 1,920 °F.
2. They are small, thus the heat generated is far less than most of the configurations out there.
3. The implication of (1) and (2) is that the turbines will not require extra cooling to prevent metalurgical heat stress.
The driver just have to treat it like a regular engine.

Turbochargers will need to be replaced way before the engine wears out. You'll trade the car way before the engine wears out.
