"Burned gasket" smell

I have a 328i convertible. When I drive in "Sport" mode for a while, the engine starts smelling like burned gasket. I don't over rev, barely go over 5000rpm. I thought it was happening when new, but now the car is 6 months old with 8K miles on it. Should I be concerned?

Same Problem

Did you ever find a solution to your problem. I have a new 2011 328i and I believe that I am getting the same smell when driving in sport drive mode. Any light you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

Ya know this is kinda curious, because during these past 2 months of winter, when I pull in the drive and shut the car off - I also get a distinct odor like burning rubber???

I always drive my car in DS mode regardless of season - I'm not shifting manually when I get this smell either, so no over revving.

I did switch out to my winter wheel/tire set, but they are exact same size as summer set and no evidence of them rubbing. Never smelled this odor before & my car has 10k miles

Thanks for Replying

I bought the car, new, just before it started snowing here. I, too, just put snow tires on the care, but did not notice if it coincided with that. I will keep researching this and would appreciate you sharing anything you can find on it. First, I am going to run some "with" and "without" DS driving mode tests to see if there is a difference....with the hope of isolating it.

Thanks again, keep in touch if you find something.

i feel like there is a plague that is going to hit the N52 engine it seems to be a very fragile engine. 2006 seems to have the more issues with its starter issue and the ticking issue.
i have had a lot of disappointment from the life span of the parts in my engine and for its age they never should have broken as soon as they did

I know this is an older thread but I noticed this burning rubber like smell again today. I had been driving in DS mode for probably 15 minutes. As soon as I smelled it I switched back to D and the smell went away.

This happened a few months ago too. That time I pulled over and checked under the hood but nothing was smoking and I couldn't smell it anymore.

Come to think of it, both times I was driving up a hill on the freeway.

Anyone learned anything else about this?

I never had an issue with my N52 motor. It worked great up till when I sold it 2 months back with 49k on it.

As for the smell I always had a weird smell when driving in manual mode. If I drive it normal auto mode I never had a smell. I smelt that since I purchased it but never thought twice about it.
