Agreed. No one makes a manual tranny like Honda. Throws in my 99 Prelude was like a rifle bolt. I like BMW's throws in the 3 series, but they still aren't up to par with a Honda.

HOW can the 3 series be better for passengers in the back than the A6 sized Audi A4?? Are they nuts? That statement alone to me shows that CnD can be off the mark with other, bigger issues in this test...

10 years from now, a used 328 will be more desirable than a G37 for the same reasons kids today would rather their parents get them a used 325 vs. a G20.

This guaranteed secondary market, while rarely mentioned in reviews, supports the superior resale value BMW 3 series offers owners.

I SERIOUSLY considered G37s coupe. It's a great car. If 335i coupe was not available then I would have bought the G37s.

I didn't want a G37 coupe because it would have probably shown some similarities to my 350Z.

But if my BMW budget was only limited to a 328, I would have gotten the G-sedan over that. I guess I am the only one who likes the looks of it.

5.9 seconds to 60? Wow, the 328i is pretty darned quick. Only half a second down from the G, which has 76 more hp.

No, I'd take the bimmer in a heartbeat. It's the decision I made back in '07 after I drove the 328i and the (then) G35 sedan (though I ended up with a 335i thanks to a great lease offer). Infiniti makes a great car, but it's simply not as refined as the E90, nor as nimble feeling, even if the objective handling results are similar between the makes.

It's not hard to see why C&D loves the 328. It's like the perfect daily driver for the enthusiast: Quick, nimble handling, can haul the family to dinner or colleagues to lunch, good gas mileage, brand prestige. And let's not forget free maintenance for 4 years. Just don't load up on the options. Leatherette is the bomb if you want a maintenance-free interior. Hell, the 'ette in my E46 looked brand new after 83k miles and 5 years of abuse.

IMHO, stripped 328i (well...plus Sport Package) over a G37 anyday.

I'd take the piece of art (BMW) over those Japanese toys any day....German Engineering FTW

I test drove both extensively and bought the 328i over G37 and would do all over again if I had to.

G37 is exactly what it is, a tin-can.

And Audi pretty ruined the only good car they had in their line-up... the new A4 blows and value-engineered is an understatement.

The A4 was the real contender, and a cloer match in driving fun. IMHO
I had a rental G37 for a week this month, and agree totally about the 7 speed auto trannie. What is the point of that thing? It seemed confused about what gear to be in, and would sometimes make some serious "mistakes" on downshifts. . The engine is strong, but not as smooth as the BMW. I thought the interior was kind of cheap looking, and there were way too many buttons spread all over the dash. I've never understood the Japanese obsession with gadgetry. Yet they kept the analog clock, which seems totally out of place.
Having said all this, I did enjoy driving the car, and could easily live with a coupe with 6MT and sports package.

Its odd this thread came up, I went and drove a G37s 6MT this weekend and was really impressed by the car. I think the value of it got me the most, but it looks like they are leasing in the 600s... Thats 335 money there.

I disagree with your opinion and agree with C&D. There is much more to consider than just 0-60. The G37s does it .5 sec quicker - yey. Did anyone notice the difference in observed mpgs?

G37 19 mpg over 350 mile trip.
328i 25 mpg over 350 mile trip.

That's a HUGE difference!

Now had this been an auto trans vs auto trans comparision, the results may have been different.

Couple of things to note:

BMW won by only one point over the G37, why? because it did not have enough luxury according to the writers..

What did they expect? The car they tested was a stripper, and not the good kind...
Did anyone catch was the Audi's as tested price was? $47K I repeat $47K for a four banger !!!!!!!!!

Now what does $47K buy??? How about a 335 with Premium, Sport, Metallic, and CA so that C&D would finally stop bitching about having to insert the key in the whole
Yes, that car MSRP's for $46,900 .. .Less than what they paid for the 4 banger Audi

Maybe then the BMW would not have been criticized for lacking luxury

Actually the BMW is down 98 hp vs. the G37, not 76 if you go by brochure published numbers. Long live the BMW underrating and drivetrain efficiency.

How can that measly, lowly 328i win a comparo against a car with so much more power? Yes, those automotive journalists (who do this stuff every day) must be skewed in their thinking. It's unfair. A tragedy.

I dont mean to sound like a fanboy, but I think the comparo was spot on. The G37 is great. Its powerful and I enjoy driving it but the slower 328i connects with you in a very satisfying way. The VQ motor for Nissan is still a bit shrill at the top of the rpm range for me.
