My L.E.T. Tune Experience = Amazing!

Disclaimer: This is the first tune I have had in the car. So all my opinions on increase in performance are compared to the stock engine from the factory. I am also using a "butt dyno" in this as I did not have time to get to the dyno yet (drove 500 miles on Friday just to get to Chicago and back so I could get the tune done in my day off). I am currently looking for a dyno in the St. Louis area so I can get a dyno run posted for you guys as soon as I can. I apologize for the "no specifics review" but I was so excited about it I wanted to get it up. Now on with the story.....

So I made the trip today up to Chicagoland to the Checksum Tuning/L.E.T. Motorsports shop to get my tune. I worked with Tony of Checksum Tuning and he is an absolutely amazing guy to work with. Tony first read my software out and then modified what he had to and then flashed the car with the L.E.T. stage 1 tune.

I was the first v 32.2 BMW that they had flashed, and we found a new little caveat to tuning the 32.2 software on the BMW. For some apparent reason, you have to clear the fault codes after flashing the car for the flash to fully take. After this all is 100%. Tony was quick to get this figured out and had me up and running with the Stage 1 flash in no time. I have since driven back from Chicago to St. Louis where I live and let me tell you, this flash is amazing and getting better!

The first thing you notice when driving around in standard Drive is that as soon as you get about 3K RPM there is gobs more power being thrown down. This feeling of being smashed back into your seat took me back to the pure excitement I had with the car when I first got it. This flash really makes the car quite fun again. I also found that I could now easily spin the hell out of the wheels in first and even into second in just the Drive mode.

The real fun begins when you flip over to Sport mode. Since the Drive mode now feels like what the Sport mode was from the factory, the Sport mode itself is a whole new beast. The tac is quick to move from left to right when in sport mode and you find the car quickly shifting through gears and climbing up the speedo much quicker than in the past. This is what Sport mode should have been from the factory.

The best part of the flash is when you are driving around in Manual mode. When you are driving around in Manual and you keep the RPMs above 3K at all times the immense power is always just a flick of the foot away and believe me, it is addicting. The passing power on the highway now is absolutely unbelievable. The torque will kick you in the back seat, but at the same time it is very smooth without any hiccup that would hint at a tune.

I have found that the turbo lag is just a bit more noticeable now, but that is because of the increased power once the turbos do kick in. I am not a huge Turbo guy, so previously I was just about completely unaware of the exact moment when the turbos kicked in. Now, however, since the increase in power is so great, I can tell when they really get going. In my mind, this is in no way a negative.

The car is also still calm in lower RPMs making it 100% drivable around town without spinning the wheels at every stop light (although this can easily be achieved as well if desired ).

The car is still adapting so I may have some more to add to this later.

Edit 5/30/09: I found the thread in 1Addicts where Tony post some info about the 135i that they had tuned with this flash. This thread has some dyno graphs for reference. I will post my graphs as soon as I get to a dyno.

Nebster has a dyno in a e92 335i after the L.E.T. tune so I am going to try to get ahold of that from him and post. I was not able to get a dyno done right after the tune, but am going to try to set something up for later in June when I will be in Chicagoland again.

L.E.T. Tune= Insane!

So I have been thinking about how to put this into words all night and day. Thought I would give it a shot. So, 335iPaul (another guy on the forum) and I decided to go up to Checksum Tuning/L.E.T. Motorsports shop yesterday. Been talking with Tony about the tune for a while now. Before I get started, HUGE props to Tony and the guys at Checksum Tuning/L.E.T. Motorsports!!! I can't say enough about these guys. They have always been willing to answer all my questions and concerns.

First of all, I have a 335xi coupe. I have always loved the car, but felt like something was missing. I have driven with a bunch of guys who have the i and was jealous after I rode with the them. To me, it seemed like the xi lacked something. Off the line, down low, etc. I know they drive different but did not realize how different the two cars really were. I went out and bought the SSTT. Reason being, ease of install. I didn't notice that much of a difference with the sstt. It has decent results, but didn't seem to give me what I was looking for. After talking with Tony for the last couple of months, I decided it was time for a different tune.

The fun part!!

After Tony flashed the car, I took it out for a spin. I had high hopes for the tune but after having the SSTT, I didn't know what to expect. I jumped in the car, and hit the gas. Just an idea of what I looked like..... The back end of my car shot out to the right. I almost hit the brakes at this point because having AWD, that has NEVER happened before! When I hit 3K rpms, the car took off like it was shot out of a cannon. I couldn't believe it. I was thrown back into the seat.

After sitting there for about a minute trying to get a hold of myself, I decided to throw it into sport mode. Unreal! Words cannot describe the feeling I had. It is def a different animal, I am totally lost for words. The torque is amazing.

I feel like I am driving a completely different car right now. After driving it again today, I got out of the car and had to make sure it was the same car I bought. I am not trying to start a war or trying to compare this tune to that tune. I am sure they are all great and they all seem to have their pros and cons. But I can honestly say that my car feels totally different today then it did before the tune. I have tried to put this into words but cannot come up with the right way to express how the car drives now.

SO this is a flash and not a piggy right? Are there multiple maps? If so how do you change between them? Also, what about going into the dealer, how do you flash back to stock?

If you are looking for HP/TQ numbers, I will get them soon. As far as actual boost, stage 1 is 11.7 PSI.

There are three stages that you can get. I have stage 1 which is an increase to 11.7 PSI in the turbos alone with a few other changes. This is a true flash so you don't just flip a switch to change the maps like you do on a piggy back. Checksum Tuning and L.E.T. Motorsports are working on a handlheld flashing tool that will allow you to flash your car yourself between a couple maps, such as stock, Stage1, and Stage2. The tool is still in development at this time so for the time being you either have to go back to you local L.E.T. flash supplier or you can contact Tony and they an send a unit out to you so that you can flash your car back to stock on your own if you need to go to the dealer.

The only way that the dealer will be able to tell that you have the tune though is if they drive the car, so for many things you will be ok taking it to the dealer, but like I said, you can also request the mobile tuning tool from Tony to flash to stock before the dealer, and then flash back to the tune after the dealer. You get free re-flashes forever so if the dealer does flash your car back to stock, you can re-flash it back to the tune without any charge.

Jay, I am going to try to setup a time to get a dyno done around the 20th meet, you want me to check on it for you as well? I will check with Ben or Tony to see who they use and then get in touch with them so we can get some graphs up here.

Hmm..

Are they new? Where about are they? Their site doesn't list an address.

Also, from their website...
Quote:
Checksum Tuning offers in-house custom tuning and dyno-proven staged tunes for your late-model Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche,Volvo, VW, and Chrysler!
So...two testimonials and no dynos now. Where's the beef?

Just playing devil's advocate.

I will get the dyno done just to have numbers for everyone. I honestly could care less what the numbers are, bottom line, the car kicks ass. But will get some numbers for everyone for sure.

1 - What is the cost?

2 - How much did you pay?

3 - Other than Chicago where else can we get this done?

i can understand not dynoing, cause it is probably too late to do befroe and after dynos.
would have been good if you took stock times from say 30mph to 100, and then did the same with your flash.

btw, why did the moderators close the other LET thread??
