Vibration hum from Wipers at speed

Hi there,

Has anyone encounters a really weird medium to high pitched vibration noise that occurs at speed (circa 70 MPH) that comes from the Windscreen area?

I think it's the wipers resonating when they hit a certain wind speed/ side wind. Possibly in conjunction with a certain type of road surface, as the speed it appears changes. Varying from 70 - 76 MPH.

You can drive through it by changing your speed, but it an awful noise and ruins the car's relaxing motorway demeanour.

My Father in Laws E91 320d SE is not afflicted so I wondering if I should just buy some new wiper blades and see what happens...

As its a tourer, have you got the roof cross bars fitted?

Are you sure its the wipers?

Your wipers are (should be) parked almost out of the airflow behind the back edge of the bonnet, so they shouldn't be subject to wind noise I would have thought?.

This has been the case for a while to stop pedestrians being skewered by wipers when you run into them and they (the pedestrians) bounce off your windscreen.

My LCI E91 has a wind whistle from the giant new-shape door mirrors at about 75mph.

Old pre LCI (with nicer small mirrors) never did this.

Don't have the roof bars fitted.

The noise comes from the base of the wind screen and sounds like when you blow through tissue paper wrapped round a comb.

The wipers seem more "prone" than on my old MK V GTI.

I can't think what else would cause it. It's not engine revs as it would happen at other speeds.

To prove its not the wipers. Turn them on, then turn the car off with them in the verticle position. Now when you restart, they will stay there until you turn them back on again. At least it doeas this on mine

I'm suprised the wipers don't auto-park if you turn the ignition off while they are sweeping! Mine don't.

I reckon the noise *could* be coming from a badly fitted windscreen; gap in the adhesive.
